Steven's Story
Hello my fellow classmates,
The past few years of my life has been an amazing time of discovery. A few years ago, I had my African ancestry determined through genetic testing. (AfricanAncestry.com). The results have been life changing for me. I discovered that my paternal heritage is based in Gabon, Africa. Gabon is a beautiful country on the west coast of Africa. Very few slaves were taken from Gabon, but those that were, were taken to Charleston. They had perfected a new technique for growing rice and were taken to the Charleston area to grow rice in the surrounding areas near Buford, SC. The Gullah people that remain in the Charleston and Savannah regions are of West African descent and are MY People. I smile to know from whence I come….

ARY, Africa is the home of knowledge, intelligence, compassion, love and a great sense of pride. I am so happy to be able to share in that pride. Charleston has become a second home to me, as I prepare to return to my true “WAKANDAN” home in Africa. As I walk the streets of Charleston, I can feel the spirit of my ancestors that walked the same streets. Even though, they were in chains and walking to the Slave Mart, where they would be sold into slavery.
I pray that you all will someday develop a desire to understand your beginning and will come to embrace the proud heritage to which you belong. My discovery has led me to desire to drop my slave name (AARON) and adopt a name that will tie me to the land and my people. My new name will be Steven Andre’ Ogooue’. The Ogooue’ river is the main river in Gabon. I just wanted to take a moment to share this information with you. I hope you will check out some of my newly posted pictures.
Your Brother, Steven A. Ogooue’
