Steven's Story

My parents are Juanita Armstrong and Troy Wood. I attended Westvale Elementary School, South Side Junior High School and Madison Heights High School, all in Anderson IN. As a youngster I was deeply involved in Boy Scouts. Beginning in 7th grade, most of my activities were related to music. During my years at Madison Heights High School, I was a percussionist in the marching and concert bands, the orchestra and the dance band. I also played in several rock & roll bands in the Anderson, IN area. They included Gilbert Street Exit, Orange Grace, and Dirtyleg (sometimes referred to as The Addison Street Miracle). In 1972, I married my high school sweetheart, Loretta Daugherty, Madison Heights High School Class of 1971. While we divorced after 15 ½ years of marriage, we share a fabulous Daughter, Jilliann Lea (Armstrong) Short, Yorktown HS Class of 2000. In 2002, Jilliann married Joshua David Short, Yorktown HS Class of 2000. Jilliann graduated with a Doctorate of Pharmacy from Purdue University and is currently the ¿Pharmacist in Charge¿ at a CVS pharmacy in Indiana. In 1989, after spending a couple of years being single, I married Victoria Sue (Ross) Armstrong. She provided me with two Step-sons ¿ Anthony Wayne Armstrong, Muncie Central High School, Class of 1997 and Eric Justin Armstrong, Cowan High School Class of 1999. Vicky and I continue to share a wonderful life together along with our three dogs. By 1974, I had stopped playing music professionally. My plan was to work at General Motors just long enough to furnish my home and save enough mon...Expand for more
ey to afford to buy all of the musical equipment required to start my own band. Economic and family pressures caused me to fail to stick to this plan. I began my GM career in 1973 at Guide Lamp in Anderson, IN but was laid off after only five months. I then obtained work at GM's Chevrolet-Muncie transmission plant in March of 1974 and worked there until being laid off in 1982. After being unemployed for nearly two years, I transferred to GM's Fisher Body plant in Marion, IN and worked there for approximately 5 years before transferring back to Chevrolet-Muncie. I remained at the Muncie plant for the remainder of my career. I retired from General Motors on 01/01/2006 after completing over 32 years of employment. Prior to my retirement, I was the Quality Network Representative, Suggestion Plan Administrator and the Communication Department Coordinator for the UAW. I worked at various job in the Quality Department for the majority of my first twenty years at GM. In 2009, after over three years of retirement, I still had not found anything to do that I was passionate about. Since childhood, whenever I was asked what I truly wanted to be I would reply ¿a musician¿. I am not sure why it took me so long to actually understand that retirement met that I could allow myself to follow my deepest desires but I only recently began playing drums again ¿ for the first time since I studied music at Ball State University in 1978. In addition to the drums, I now have an in-home recording studio and am studying piano, song writing, and recording engineering. Life is great!
