Steven's Story

So, the day after graduation I went to work full time at Western Auto where had been working part-time since 9th grade. 4yrs later, I got married, for the first time, and left Western Auto to work for Sorensen Sports as a sales manager and ski technician. As it turned out, I was the only certified and bonded snow ski tech for the next 16 years. I stayed with Sorensen¿s for 19years, bringing bicycles into the mix in 1980 and establishing the best and most successful bicycle shop in the area. In 1997 we decided to close the shop and I ended up taking a position with the Port Angeles School District as an entry level Information Technology Service Technician with classmate Dan Myers as my immediate supervisor and mentor (the most enjoyable person I¿ve ever worked for!). 7 months later, Dan left to work at the Hospital and I ended up the lead tech for the district. Six years later, I had worked my way up to Director of Information Services. In 2004 I applied for an opening at Peninsula College for a Director of Information Technology Services (DITS) and ended up being the successful candidate. y initiatives and integration in the educational arena. I¿m still working hobbies, so go beat that! I¿m still cycling and have added kayak building and vintage audio equipment and media (exotica from 1956 to the early 60¿s) collecting for recreation and mental therapy. In 2007 I ran as a candidate for Port Angeles School Board #4 and was successful . I¿m in my 2nd year of a 4yr term an currently the president of the board. Ironically, I¿ll be giving a speech at the graduation ceremony for the class of 2009 this June, both at the Port Angeles High School and Lincoln High. I¿d love to include a few comments from the class of ¿74¿ so if you have any suggestions/stories, please feel free to send them to me. I can¿t guarantee I¿ll use them but if I do, I¿ll give the contributor the appropriate credit. I¿ve travelled a fair amount in the past 10yrs with trips to Nova Scotia (in the winter¿ frozen ocean is very cool!!!!), Coco Beach, the Florida Keys, the north shore of Oahu, and Manhattan/NYC for Christmas in 2000 and 2001 (pre and post 9/11) as the most enjoyable trips so far. I¿m looking forward to seeing you all at this year¿s reunion! Take care, Steve Baxter
