Steven's Story
Life
I completed my B.A at Reed College in 1968, got married to a Reedie, and we both went to the University of Toronto for graduate studies, me in physics and her in chemistry, although she completed her Ph.D. in pharmacology. I completed his Ph.D. in molecular spectroscopy and later completed an MBA degree with a major in marketing. After a brief post-doctoral fellowship during which I flew a laser fluorosensor in a DC3 to characterize fluorescence from oil on the surface of water, I worked at Electronic Associates on noncontacting industrial sensors for the pulp and paper industry, including on-line color control and noncontacting temperature sensors. When Electronics Associates went into receivership, I joined Ontario Hydro Research, where I worked for 12 years. During this period we ¡°invented¡± several new technical fields.
I spent 6 years as Director of Engineering and Research for Underground Systems, Inc., where I was also responsible for USi¡¯s capacitor subsidiary, Chicago Condenser Corporation. Under EPRI sponsorship, I also made the first measurements of ac loss in high temperature superconducting conductor elements a...Expand for more
nd defined the basic design configuration for the HTSC power cable which is presently under development by American Superconductor and Pirelli.
I am presently Director of the Electrical Insulation Research Center at the University of Connecticut, where my work ranges from development of an on-line sensors to fundamental investigations of high field phenomena in dielectrics using proprietary software for transient nonlinear finite element analysis with coupled electric and thermal fields. I consult for a range of companies, including Toshiba in Japan, which takes me there every year. Recently, I have beome associated with a Chinese university, which takes me to China yearly, as well.
I have retained an interest in music and stereo equipment, and our house in CT includes a pair of Dayton Wright electostatics as well as a pair of Klipschorns. We also have a house in downtown Toronto, where my wife works at the Research Institute at the Hospital for Sick Children and is a Professor at the University of Toronto. I also have a graduate student at the University of Toronto, where I am an Adjunct Professor in Electrical Engineering.
