Steven's Story

School I got an Army ROTC scholarship to Tulane to study Chemistry – amazing, since I didn’t do so well in Mr. Fonte’s chemistry class! Unfortunately, my personal and family life was such a mess that I didn’t make the most of my opportunity at Tulane, and I was anxious to get married too young, so I left school to go on active duty. After the Army, I moved to southern California where I got my BA in psychology from California State University at Long Beach Military LATE 1980s – THE ARMY YEARS In the summer of 1985 I went to Ft. Jackson, South Carolina for basic training – at 5’10”, 117 lbs, I was a single pound over the minimum weight, but my spirit (and the drill instructors) made up the difference. ommunications, most of which is still very hush-hush. I also made the single biggest mistake of my life – getting married. But you know what they say – ‘if you can’t say something nice about someone…’ I was eventually assigned to a U.S. Army detachment to a West German Army artillery regiment. Very unusual duty, locked in a communications vault – very hush hush. Let’s just say that the unit was disbanded about six months after the US-USSR treaty to eliminate tactical nuclear weapons was signed… My doomed-from-the-start marriage fell apart in the summer of 1988, but I did get to have some fun in Europe: weekend and holiday trips to Belgium, Holland, France, Austria, Italy, and one minor diplomatic incident during which I urinated on an East German boarder post. Six months later, the Berlin Wall fell, and communism in Europe was over. Coincidence? I think not…
