Steven's Story

If we're BHS classmates and you're on Facebook, friend-request me. After college in the early 80's, I was fortunate enough to become involved in opening a successful chain of tanning salons, The Golden Touch, on the Cape. With dreams of going nationwide with the salons, I migrated to Chicago in 1983. After struggling to get the tanning business going in Chicago, I finally realized that folks had caught on to fake-baking being bad for you (go figure). So, I supported myself by bartending, modeling, and working as a graphic artist. I worked and played hard, and began to assemble a solid track record of building strong, creative teams and growing businesses. As the Senior Art Director for HA-LO Worldwide, I helped to develop and launch new product lines, collateral and identity strategies. From there, I went on to head up the HA-LO-owned Duncan & Hill Advertising as Creative Director. In 1993, I took my savings and founded my own graphic design studio: Black Dog Design Company. Black Dog's reputation for cutting edge graphics and consistent brand imaging quickly established us as the agency-of-record for dozens of major sports teams including the Houston Oilers, Cincinnati Reds, Milwaukee Bucks, and the Chicago Bears. Black Dog followed the industry trend in 1995 and went interactive...and quickly gained recognition and market share by developing award-winning websites for Ace Hardware, Bally Total Fitness, and Citibank. As the CEO/Chief Creative Office...Expand for more
r for Black Dog Interactive (BDI for short), I was responsible for the overall creative and corporate direction of the agency and its 20+ employees. During this time, I spent my off-hours being single, traveling thru Europe with friends, and riding my vintage Harley ('72 FLH Shovelhead, completely restored from the ground up). After more than a decade in business and unimaginable success, in 2006 BDI was fortunate to be sought out by several larger companies for acquisition...and after years of 80-hour weeks spent building and running the company, I knew in my heart the time was right to sell. Next to marrying my wife, it was one of the best decisions of my life. I then took a year off to work with contractors and landscapers in building a silly-large home (3000 sq. ft for 2 people?) in a new development in a suburb 30 minutes outside of Chicago. In 2007 I was approached by Acquity Group, a $60M 300-person interactive agency, to build their internal design group from scratch...and have enjoyed my role there as Creative Director tremendously. As I mentioned, I'm blessed to be married to an amazingly beautiful, intelligent and successful woman. We met in 1998 while she was an intern at Black Dog and were married in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico in 2001. We commute into the city together every day. No kids yet--we spend our time just enjoying each other's company, sharing in life and traveling (like to the Cape in September, Vegas in October and Cabo in November).
