Abortive attempt at Aerospace Engineering Major. What a mistake!
Workplace
After High School and 2 abortive attempts at starting a degree, I finally ditched the small beans Student jobs and embarked on the great experiment to try a more serious and promising line of work in Data Processing by starting at the very bottom (the mail room) at a small service company (Data Line) doing data processing for S&L's. After 7 years, I'd worked my way through Computer Operations, Application Programming and then into System Programming.
From there, I wanted to find a similar company which had more than a single geographic location which would allow me to travel without needing to resign.
After a nearly a year of interviews during lunch breaks, evenings and weekends, I began working for Systematics Inc (SI). Over the next 5 years I worked in 5 different SI data centers around Long Beach and Los Angeles areas, doing Application Consulting and Project Leading.
Shortly after the LA Riots I joined SI's Global Division and accepted an 11 month expat assignment in Dublin, Ireland. That assignment was cancelled the same day ...Expand for more
that the movers came to pack us up. We ended up living out of our suitcases for a total of 4 months during which I worked several very short 'business trip' types of consulting assignments in Little Rock, Arkansas; Wellington, New Zealand; and Monterey, Mexico before drawing a 12 month assignment working as an expat in Leeds, England. That assigment actually lasted 18 months and during that time Systematics merged with (and changed name to) ALLTEL.
Shortly after the name change, I accepted another expat assignment for an additional 6 months in Glasgow, Scotland. That one actually lasted for 3 years!
At the completion of the Glasgow assignment, having decided that it was time to experience bigger cultural differences, I accepted another expat assignment for 18 months in Warsaw, Poland. Again, that one actually lasted 4 years and June 2002.
Since then, I have been on assignment in Bangkok, Thailand and expect to be here for another 14-18 months.
After that, who knows? This year marks the 10th year working 'overseas' and though I still think I'm not yet ready to repatriate, I am thinking about it a little more often now.
