Steven's Story

I can recall scenes from Alhambra High 1959 - 63 as if it were yesterday: sitting in the bleachers for assemblies, eating lunch around the senior plaza, racing around the track at the start of P.E. I remember some teachers well: Mr. Lenser, Miss Power, Mr. Cosand, Miss Hood, principal Strother, and counselor Phillips who gave me excellent college advice. The other students I knew were mainly from the College prep track because we took most classes together. Michael Couzens, Tom Thieme, Herb Levin, Victor Chong, and many more. I observed social life more than I actually had any because I was two years younger than most (graduated at 16) and I had to work after school, week...Expand for more
ends, and summers to save for college. No car, no dating, no football games or dances for me, but I valued the experience, being part of the Alhambra community and enjoyed learning about others' lives. I can even remember who was dating whom, as far as people discussed the topic. It was a memorable early adolescence; we even had a soda shop across from the high school, car clubs, and a record store on Main Street! I went on to UCLA, getting a B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. and became a professor of sociology at Cal State L.A. for 40 years. I've stayed in Southern California and still enjoy driving around Alhambra to see how our little city has changed, and what remains the same.
