Steven's Story

OK, my life, in a nutshell... Well, high school was a weed-induced fog that I don't remember too well. I bounced between Delano and China Lake from the 4th grade till high school graduation due to the parents being divorced and all. After HS, I knew I was going nowhere fast, picking grapes was no fun, so I joined the Navy (wonder why?) and became an Electronics Technician (bottom of my class). After my first hitch, I got restless, got out and went to school. Went to Bakersfield Community College, majored in Electronics (bottom of my class) took me 3 years, but got an AS. So, I was ready to go to work, right at the start of the Recession of '81... After some dead-end jobs and some soul-searching, I went back into the Navy. Life was looking up. In 85, I married Leah, such a lovely woman, (she's such a saint!). She got me turned around for the better. Stopped smoking and drinking... as much... In 86, we had a daughter, Rachel and in 87, we welcomed Steven II. We were stationed at NAS Lemoore and then, the Navy screwed me and sent me orders to the USS Peleliu (LHA-5). That was the worst two years of hell in my life. So bad that I decided to get out again. We had bought a house in Hanford, so with 12 years active duty, I got out again. Started with the dead-end jobs again and waited for the "90 day window to re-enlist" counting down. Fortunately, the Post Office called and I became a mail carrier. I've been with the PO since '89 and "worked" my way up to my present position as an Electronics Technician. My family has got to be my greatest accomplishment and such a source of great emotion. My wife, Leah, just brought out the better part of me and I can only hope that I have been a positive in her life as well...(ha) My children are like the total opposite of me... good-looking, friendly, out-going, smart, confident, never smoked, and don't party (as much), play sports. joined the clubs, etc... They have beautiful, straight white teeth and got contacts and haircuts and socially acceptable clothing. They stay on the computer a little too long and play too many video games, but they really are perfect models of middle class suburbia. I, on the other hand, still struggle with my identity, it's "enough". Good enough, average... BOOOORING! "Smart enough" not to totally go down the wrong path, but NOT smart enough to capitalize on the electronics stocks when I was on the ground floor in 74. I was pretty "buff" when I was in the Navy, but now, it's enough. I went from a 28 inch waist in HS to 30 in at 30 and 32 in at age 40, now I struggle to keep a 34 waist. That's 50 pounds since HS... but I'm getting back to working out and hopefully, that will regress. We have the 4 bedroom, two story with pool and spa, and it's enough... not bad, but nothing special. Oh, and a garage with "project cars" while the newer cars sit in the driveway. I ...Expand for more
have to say that much of my problem seems to be my job. I work "graveyard", so I'm not too active during the day. Not that my job keeps me hopping, I have a cushy government job of sitting around, waiting for computers to break. So, I'm lazy at work, lazy at home... and it's enough. I'm "earning my age" at the PO and that will continue until I retire. I had 12 years active duty in the Navy and I couldn't let that go for naught, so I joined the Reserves and was able to hold on long enough to retire as an ET1. No money until I turn 60, but it's enough. Right now, we're comfortable, the family is doing well. Rachel graduated from UC Riverside this year (2008) with a Biology major and plans to become a military pediatrician. Steven joined the US Navy in 2005 and followed his old man's career field of electronics, but he actually understands it... He is currently homeported in Japan on the USS McCampbell (DDG-85). Hopefully, Leah and I can have a little fun while we wait for grandchildren to ground us again... at least not for 10 years! But due to the "empty-nest syndrome", we got 3 dogs. We love going to the coast for day trips, just fishing and letting the dogs run on the beach and we go camping a lot during the summer. We are going to the gym four days a week and take ballroom dancing lessons. We are really getting involved in our social groups and never pass on a party if there's going to be dancing... or karaoke! New plan (2010): Well, scratch the plans for a 3rd career as a Correctional Officer. I made it through all the requirements and was waiting for an appointment to the academy, then the economy tanked, then, I had a visit to the ER for bleeding ulcers. That pretty much disqualified me. So, I have decided to ride it out in the Postal Service and retire in 5 years when my military retirement kicks in. And then, go find a nice island in the Philippines to rule over! 2013 plan - after the Selma REC closed in 2008, I got involuntarily transferred to the Marysville P&DF. The work was good but the living arrangement sucked... Then in 2010, Marysville closed and I got involuntarily transferred back to the Fresno P&DC... where I should have gone, in the first place, back in 2008!! Fresno is safe because we handle the IRS for the Western region Can't figure why they still want to close Bakersfield and Stockton though. No grandchildren yet, Rachel is still in the Army with plans for the Army to pay for medical school. Steven got out of the Navy after 8 years and will stay in the Reserves while going back to school. He changed jobs a while back from ET to HM, Hospital Corpsman. So, he'll be looking to get the Navy to pay for medical school. Retirement still set for 2015 Thank you for your interest, contact me. I'd love to hear from you. Steve - Rassle_co at the hot one I'm also on Facebook... definitely more so!!
