Steven's Story

Hi ! ! ! I love to hear from my old (and most of them are very old) friends, classmates and colleagues. Being a history buff, I really like to hear how folks have weathered the trials and tribulations of time. So... to return the favor in advance, I'll use this space to briefly relate the major chapters of my life. Each one is filled with tons of memories that I cherish. Here goes; EARLY YEARS: Dad was career Air Force NCO, so we moved a few times in my early years, but I grew up mainly in Atwater, CA (Grades 1-6) and Port Hueneme, CA (Grades 6-12). At Hueneme High School I was sort of a second tier scholar (3.2 GPA) and a third tier athlete (Frosh football, H2O Polo and Swim Team). I loved those Friday night parties at "the Shack" -on the beach near the power plant. Too bad we got too lazy to collect driftwood, so during one party we burned the shack for warmth. Had great fun making movies with Wes Ponder for Mr. Penhallow's film class. (Good ol'8mm). 1973-77 - College at L.M.U. in Los Angeles. Graduated with Film & TV Production degree, so as one might predict, I sought work in the U.S. Air Force. (Makes perfect sense, right?) During the summer after graduation, before I went active, I met my wife, Carol. We married in 1978, halfway through my first year as a military officer . Over the next 15 years we had some great adventures, AND we had three children -boy-girl-girl. (They are all grown and doing great -but that's another story.) Some of the things I did in the military (back when I was a true "peace activist") were; 1978-82 -ICBM (Titan II) Missile Launch Officer / Crew Commander - Did 205 tours of duty under the Arizona desert. Luckily we never got "the order" :). 1982-84 -Missile Crew Instructor at Vandenberg AFB, CA. 1984-87 -Assistant Professor, L.M.U., Los Angeles. (Back where I'd gone to college. Cool!) 1987-88 -Commander, Tomahawk Ground-Launched Cruise Missile, United Kingdom. I ...Expand for more
was a Major by then, and had command of 70 U.S. and British troops (and 16 Tomahawk Missiles). 1988 - Arms Control Inspector. Made several trips to USSR as part of US Team to verify the Soviets were destroying their missiles as agreed to in the Reagan-Gorbachov "INF Treaty". What an adventure!!! 1988-90 - Back to Tomahawk missiles as commander of U.S. and Italian troops, then Chief of Training, at a base in Sicily, Italy. 1990-93 - Air Logistics Officer at Frankfurt, Germany. While there we saw the cold war end, USSR collapse and reunification of Germany. Amazing times. Family made vacation trips all over Europe. What an education for the kids! In 1993 I retired from the Air Force and moved to central California (Turlock) where I began my second career -as a government bureaucrat. For over 15 years I have worked for our local county as a contract analyst. I specialize in contracting with colleges, vocational schools and other providers of training for our programs that get unemployed and laid-off workers some education so they can find employment. As I write this (June 2009), these are "boom times" in my business. We're spending your "stimulus plan" money as fast as we can. I hope it works! I also hope I can leave this job sometime in the next several years so Carol and I can build our dream home (a log home) in far Northern California. We have a piece of land near Fort Jones / Scott Valley. It's on a hillside with pines on the high ground, and oaks down below. We've got our well in, and we dream about the place everyday, and camp there as often as possible. We might run our house as a B&B if it will help us get a bigger place -we think that would be a nice challenge and great fun too. (Hope you'll visit!) Well That brings you up-to-date for now. I hope you'll leave a note on my Bulletin Board. Please let me know what's up with you and what's gone on in your life over the years! - Steve
