Steven's Story

Life Upon Graduation from High School I did a 19 Career in the Navy and now work as a Civil Servant. Military Bio spells out most of it. I've been married since 1980 and have two sons. We've been living in San Diego since 1984. I still visit my Sister in Rosemead now and then. We travel to Montana just about every other year to visit with my wife's family. I'm still a Green Bay Packer fan, fish as much as I can, and enjoy the outdoors of southern California. I had a super traumatic knee injury in 1983, which killed my running career. I still enjoy sports but on a limited basis. Military History: Navy Boot Camp Sep 77-Oct 77 Radioman A School Oct 77-Jan 78 Commander Submarine Force Pacific (COMSUBPAC) Pearl Harbor Hi Feb 78-Oct 81 IMCO School Charleston Sc Oct 81-Mar 82 USS Reclaimer (ARS-42) Mar 82-Nov 83 Naval Station (NAVSTA) Pearl Harbor Hi Nov 83-Mar 84 Naval Communications Station (NAVCOMMSTA) San Diego Ca Apr 84-Dec 84 USS Reasoner (FF-1063) Dec 84-Feb 86 Radioman C School San Diego Ca Feb-May 86 Comm System Tech Control School San Diego Ca May-Aug 86 USS Halsey (CG-23) Aug 86-May 89 Commander Naval Surface Force Pacific Fleet (COMNAVSURFPAC) San Diego Ca May 89-May 92 Commander Naval Special Warfare Group One (COMNAVSPECWARGRU One) San Diego Ca May 92-Oct 96 As Civil Servant/Government Contractor Commander Naval Special Warfare Command (COMNAVSPECWARCOM) Coronado Ca (Analyist/Advisor) Mar 97-Jul 97 Space and Warfare (SPAWAR) San Diego Ca (Message Center Manager) Jul 97-Jun 97 Commander Naval Special Warfare Group One (COMNAVSPECWARGRU ONE) San Diego Ca (Communications Course Manager/Instructor/Advisor) Jun 97-Oct 02 Commander Naval Special Warfare Center (COMNAVSPECWARCEN) San Diego Ca (Communications Course Instructor) Oct 02-Jan 04 Commander Naval Special Warfare Center Advanced Training Command (Communications Course Instructor) Jan 04 - To Preset I initially joined to use the G.I bill for school after my 4 year enlistment ended. I got married and had one son by the time my enlistment was up and stayed in for job security. Once 8 years was up decided to stay to retirement since I had already was close to the half way mark. Ended up retiring with 19 Years in the service. Became a Government Defense Contractor, which has turned in to a civil servant position at Naval Special Warfare Commands. Still with NSWC. Boot camp and my initial skills school sent me to San Diego, then I was sent to COMSUBPAC in Hawaii for my first real command. It was alright duty, but living in Hawaii was not as good as ...Expand for more
I through it would be. After COMSUBPAC, I went to Morse Code school in Charleston Sc, then returned to Hawaii assigned to the USS Reclaimer. The Reclaimer was salvage/rescue ship homeported in Pearl Harbor. During my tour on board the Reclaimer we conducted one Westpac (7 Month) deployment in addition to numerous smaller deployments. Ports Visited - Guam, Philippines, Korea, Diego Garcia, Ponape Island, Tobi Island, Palau Islands, Turk Island, Pago Pago Island, and numerous smaller Islands in the Marshall Island chain. My tour of duty was cut short due to a knee injury. I spent the next year bouncing around until I could return to full duty, which was on the USS Reasoner. The Reasoner was a anti-submarine ship. Not much deployment stuff while I was on board. I went to two major schools, then on was assigned to the USS Halsey. The Halsey was a anti-air cruiser. During my tour the ship was to deployed to the Persian Gulf twice, the first deployment was a round the world cruise. Ports visit during my time on board - Hawaii, Guam, Philippines, Diego Garcia, Thailand, Korea, Hong Kong, Sri Lanka, Kenya, United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Italy, Spain, Puerto Rico, and St. Kitts Island. My next tour was COMNAVSURFPAC, which was a staff command in San Diego. Not much happened there other than office work except a 3 month deployment on board the USS O'Brien which visited Colombia, Panama, Costa Rico, Ecuador and Guatemala. My next duty station was COMNAVSPECWARGRU. I worked as a mobile communications support person for the Special Warfare Units. During that time frame I was deployed to NAVSPECWARUNIT ONE in Guam for 6 Months. Others deployments included - Alaska, Hawaii, Japan, Korea, and Thailand. I retired from SPECWARGRU 1. As a Civil Servant I'm back at SPECWAR teaching communications to the same people I supported when I was active duty. The military life has been rewarding in its own way for me. Being able to support the War Fighter during the last two major conflicts has been tough, especially when you know some of them that gave all, but such is life when you are connected with a job that is designed for war. My family life is good as it gets. My wife Barbara and I have been married since 1980 and our two sons have careers to be proud of. Michael our oldest is in the Army and he is attempting to make it a career, Matthew our youngest is a Police Officer in New Mexico and is also attempting to make it a career. We are all sports fans and enjoying camping and seeing the great american sites.
