Steven's Story
Life has been quite busy since 1989. I attended The Ohio State University for 6 years on an Army ROTC Engineering Scholarship that I received in high school (all because I was sitting next to Graham Corneck in Physics Class one day while he was filling out his application and decided to fill one out as well). During my junior year however I changed course, dropped out of engineering, and pursued a degree in Elementary Education with an emphasis on Middle School Math.
I graduated in 1995, then was immediately commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Army as a Field Artillery Officer. I spend 4 years in the Army, with the following assignments:
- 2 months at Ft. Knox, KY training and evaluating ROTC students about night patrolling.
- 10 months at Ft. Sill, OK attending FAOBC (Field Artillery Officer Basic Course).
- 1 month at Ft. Benning, GA attending Airborne School
- 3 years assigned to the 1st Armored Division, Baumholder, Germany (1996-1999). While in Germany, I was briefly deployed to Bosnia-Herzegovina as a NATO Peacekeeper in 1996.
1999 - Resigned from the Army, left Europe after 3 wonderful years (thanks for visiting Dave and Jackie Anderson), moved back to North Olmsted (and in with my parents) to pursue a teaching career. Was a substitute teacher in Westlake in the fall of 1999, looking for a full time teaching posi...Expand for more
tion and then...went to Chicago for a weekend-o-fun and met the most amazing person in the world. 3-months later threw everything in my car, moved to Chicago, and started my new life with Susan.
2000 - Got engaged to Susan. Bought a condo near Wrigley Field. Started my first teaching job as a Middle School Math Teacher at Mary, Seat of Wisdom Catholic School, Park Ridge, IL (near O'Hare).
2002 - Got married. My best man was fellow classmate Dave Anderson (who was my roommate at Ohio State for 3 years). Also started a new job at Lincoln Middle School (Public), also in Park Ridge, IL, where I taught 6th grade math for 4 years.
2006 - My son, Brogan Scott Smith, was born June 13, 2006. I quit teaching to be a stay-at-home dad, and to allow my wife to continue her advertising career.
2007 - My wife left the world of advertising agencies to take a new job (client side) at Activision Publishing in Santa Monica, CA. We bought a house in West Los Angeles (near Century City) and are busy starting our new life out west.
June 11, 2008 - Real time now. Brogan turns 2 this week. Grandma and Grandpa Smith arrive Friday from North Olmsted for a 10-day visit. I hope to be back in Cleveland this summer for a week near the end of July. If you make it out to LA (or are already here) and want to say "hi", give me a call: 310-559-5175.
