Steven's Story

I grew up in Oakland and attended Allendale Elementary (K-6) and Hamilton Jr High (7-9). It was a middleclass and very diverse neighborhood. I had classmates I had grown up with and knew well. My social structure was very stable. I had good friends, had girlfriends and played a lot of sports. I had friends of all races and backgrounds. Academically, I was an honor roll student. I was looking forward to going to Fremont High. Suddenly, in the summer, my parents decided to move to Castro Valley. Castro Valley was a big culture shock for me as Castro Valley was not very diverse. There was one black student at the school when I began my sophomore year and he was a senior. The next two years, no blacks. One of my neighbors actually put up a for sale sign at their house when a black family moved in across the street from them and lobbied the neighbors to shun them. Since I entered CVHS as a sophomore and knew not a single soul, I went through a very awkward stage. Not only that, I was younger than most of my classmates. As time passes, a year is nothing of course, but back then it was a lot. So my sophomore year was very tough socially. In the summer between my sophomore and junior year my father was killed in an accident. I was 15 and the oldest child with a brother 12, a sister 10 and a brother who was just 2. Receiving no help from any family members, I became a "father/brother". Although I was only 15, my mother had me driving for errands and dropping my little brother at day care. It seemed that everything had collapsed and my life was very confusing. My academics suffered, my complexion was horrible, Family life was hard and I was socially awkward. I had no idea how all of this was affecting me and there were no outlets for help or counseling that I knew of. Since I had left my social structure of friends behind in Oakland, I really had few good friends to help me through this. I am sure that most of the friends I made at CVHS realized any of this was going on. There was no life insurance on my dad and the settlement from the industrial accident was slow in coming, so we were also very much a low-income family. Junior year pretty much sucked, too. My senior year at CVHS was a little better. Friendships became better, academically...Expand for more
I was back on track and I had a steady girlfriend, although she went to Hayward High. I was a diver on the swim team, my first high school sport, and it seemed I would be going to college. Boy was I glad high school was over. I had some money put aside for college, but my mother persuaded me to loan it to one of my father's friends who was having a tough time. The guy, of course, didn't pay me back, so I was not able to start college in September, so I worked until the spring quarter. Well, that's all the sad stuff...College was great, I was a diver on the swim team at Hayward State as a freshman, then helped start the rugby club in my sophomore year and played rugby for a few years. At one point we were ranked 8th in the Nation and were a very good squad. Rugby is really what changed my life. I received a lot of respect from my teammates. I was a little guy, but found myself to be very tough and I was captain of the team. I actually started feeling pretty good about myself. Since that time, I have had quite a few different jobs, but finally settled into a 20 year career re-building precision machinery. I was a single dad with custody of my two oldest daughters, now 41 and 40, then I met my current wife, Donna. We have been together since 1986. We have two children of our own, a daughter 27 who graduated from Cal Poly SLO and a son 23, who studies and plays rugby at Central Washington Univ. I retired at one point when our kids were in daycare and became a "stay-at-home mom" to our two young children. After seven years, my wife and I decided I should start contributing to the life-style I had become accustomed to, so now I am a realtor. My 40-year-old daughter has my grandson, 7 and my grand daughter, 1. Those of you that may have known me during and after my college years know that there are many special people and events that have been in my life and I do not mean to disrespect that by not mentioning those people and things here. There is a lot more to the story... Anyone that has any vague memories of me in high school and would like to connect, send me a note through this website or email me. The email address can't be posted on this site, but it is simply my name all together lower case (using steventitus) and at yahoo.
