Steven's Story

All: The last time I saw any of my classmates was at our 10 year reunion in 1977, at the Huntington Sheraton Hotel. I had so much fun I had to rent a room there that night. So what do you say to people you haven't seen in 38 years? So my story: Practiced law in San Diego to 1978 when I moved to Pago Pago, American Samoa, to become Assistant Attorney General. After a couple of years got married, and went into private law practice. That lasted about 15 years, with three years in the mid-1980's as a political appointee of the Governor. Being a political appointee when you're still young and serious can be hazardous to your health--that contributed to my divorce in 1988. In 1989 I partnered up with Debra, and we eventually married in 2003, after having one daughter in 1993. A week after my daughter was born I went to work for the locally owned community bank as the Chief Loan Officer and a member of the senior management team. In 2001 the bank was acquired by the Australia New Zealand Banking Group, where I remained through the end of 2012 mostly holding down the role of Head of Credit in American Samoa. In 2012 a new Governor was elected. He was one of my colleagues when we both worked for the Governor in the mid-1980's, and he asked me and several of our old colleagues from way back then to join his administ...Expand for more
ration. Being older and wiser, I'm a political appointee again, Chief Legal Counsel to the Governor. My daughter is a student at University of Hawaii at Hilo on the Big Island. She's happy there because she has 15 or 16 or 17 first cousins (I have to name them and count on my fingers to remember how many and I still miss a couple) all in Honolulu and they wouldn't leave her alone if she were at the Manoa campus. Debra works at a locally owned tools / hardware / building supplier managing inventory control. Do you have any idea how many line items a hardware store has? Pago Pago is on the Island of Tutuila. The island is about 19 miles long and averages about 3 miles wide. It's about the size of Catalina, with around 60,000 people. We live on a half acre out in the "country", about a mile from the ocean in an area known as Lepuapua, which is a suburb of Leone Village. We have things like papaya, mangoes, pineapples, and coconuts growing on our land. I hold a chiefly title from the island of Upolu in Independent Samoa, "Muagututi'a" ("Ti'a" for short). I visit my brothers in Southern California every year or so. One brother Jim lives in Newport Beach, the other, Dan, lives in Glendale in the house my grandfather built in the early 1950's. So that's my story. I look forward to reading some of yours.
