Steven's Story

After high school I went to Southwestern College and studied architectural drafting along with several courses of personal interest. I then attended California State Polytechnic University in Pomona studying Architecture. I found that being away from home and trying to concentrate on college studies was very trying. Living in a dormitory was not enjoyable at all but I put up with it. When I returned to National City after college I found a job with an architecture firm in La Mesa and eventually began living there. While I enjoyed working in architecture I also developed an interest in law enforcement. In 1975 I became a Reserve Police Officer with the San Diego Police Department and worked with various officers most Friday and Saturday nights for several years. Due to the nature of the architecture and construction business there were many lay-offs and changing of architecture firms over the years. In 1992, while in a lay-off period, I was contacted by a large architecture firm in Tulsa, Oklahoma and ended up moving to Tulsa and working for that firm as a Certified Construction Specifier. My interest in law enforcement continued in Tulsa and I became a Reserve Deputy Sheriff with the Tulsa County Sheriff's Office. I worked at several other Architecture firms in Tulsa over the years and in 2007 became the Director of Architecture for a medium size firm in Tulsa. In 2009 the bad economy and recession took it's toll and the firm went out of business. I was unemployed for 8 months until a Sergeant at the Sheriff's Office suggested that I join the Sheriff's Office as a full-time deputy. I di...Expand for more
d begin working for the Sheriff's Office and after graduating from the Oklahoma State Law Enforcement Academy I was assigned as a criminal investigator at the Tulsa County Jail. After working as an investigator for a couple of years, the Undersheriff came to me and asked if I would assist the Sheriff's Office in the design and construction of a new training center. The Sheriff's Office had just purchased 33 acres of a private shooting training center to convert to the Sheriff's Office use. I spent approximately 2-1/2 years in design and construction on the project completing the training building and upgrading the adjacent shooting range facilities. In 2015 I was promoted to Corporal and was assigned as an evening shift supervisor at the jail. In 2016 I was asked to take the position of Quartermaster for the Sheriff's Office where I am currently working and plan to remain until I retire from the Sheriff's Office in August 2017. Upon retirement from the Sheriff's Office I will be returning to the architecture firm I worked for in 2009 to assist in running the office. I plan to work full time in architecture for about 5 more years and then cut back to part time. In February 2023 I am working at Gallup Architects as a Project Manger who I worked for previously and will be working for two more years when Tim Gallup will retire and close the office. I then plan to go back to work for Beck Design where I worked previously for a couple of more years before I finally decide to stop working ... maybe ... then volunteer at Chruch for various projects and maybe work part time at something ... whatever ...
