Yaakov's Story
Life
Lawyer, married 25 years, 3 kids, Orthodox, live in Israel. No need to go Gold! Now the longer version for the Golds: After high school, I did my undergrad work at Brandeis University outside of Boston, and then worked for a year as a paralegal in New York between college and law school (at Vanderbilt Law School in Nashville, Tennessee). During that year, for a variety of reasons, I began attending an Orthodox synagogue, and the more I learned about Orthodox Judaism, the more impressed I became. I ultimately decided that that was how I wanted to live my life. I can honestly say that itÂs a decision IÂve never once regretted.
ItÂs also a decision that led to a number of other good things about my life. Like my wife, for example, whoÂs the daughter of a tenth-generation Orthodox rabbi and who would never have considered even dating someone who wasnÂt Orthodox. SheÂs one of the most brilliant people IÂve ever met (her resume is enough to make you want to throw up -- valedictorian in college, 800 LSATs, etc., etc. -- try to guess how many arguments I manage to win!), and I feel very lucky to have met and married her. WeÂve now been married for 23 years, and we have three children (all of whom are in h...Expand for more
igh school, heaven help me!): a girl and two boys.
As for where we live: my wife and I had agreed when we married on moving to Israel, for a mixture of religious, philosophical and practical reasons. We moved in 1993 (which was when the name change occurred), and we now live in a town called Beit Shemesh, which is in between Jerusalem and Tel-Aviv -- about half an hour from Jerusalem and 45 minutes from Tel-Aviv. ThereÂs a *huge* Anglo community in Beit Shemesh -- several hundred families. We even have our own website. After we moved to Israel, we had to requalify in order to be admitted to the Israel Bar. This involved taking a series of examinations (the most grueling of which we were fortunately exempt from, since we had been admitted as lawyers outside of Israel for more than five years) and serving a period of articles, as in the British system. Because of our experience, however, we served the minimum six-month period. WeÂre now both practicing law in Israel, both of us as in-house corporate attorneys. IÂm VP and general counsel of a Nasdaq-listed company called Arotech Corporation (ARTX), which, to my delight, is located in Beit Shemesh, and weÂre enjoying watching our children grow and thrive here.
