Steven's Story

BEFORE HIGH SCHOOL: I grew up in a middle class family. I was the oldest of 5 kids (4 boys & 1 girl). My dad was an aeronautical engineer and my mom did everything else. We lived in Chatsworth, Canoga Park and finally Northridge. We had lots of Pets. I enjoyed Stamp & Coin collecting, Bowling, FIshing, Shooting, Hiking & Camping. I was a Cub Scout, Boy Scout & played Little League Baseball. G. H. HIGH SCHOOL: I was a slightly above average student, but never really applied myself. I got along with just about everyone. I hung out with a kind of middle of the road crowd. I liked girls, but was not comfortable with them; I was somewhat shy & awkward. In hindsight I was a bit of a punk and at times a jerk. Towards the end of the 10th grade I crashed a motorcycle shattering my elbow. This eliminated any HS sports & most of PE, but I made a full recovery. In spite of everything, High School was a wonderful time of parties, dating, drive in movies, beach parties & cruising Van Nuys Blvd in my 1959 Chevy SS convertible. The movie "American Graffiti" came close to my life. During the summer of 1963 I attended a program called the "Devil Pups" at Camp Pendleton Marine Base. It was designed to show High School students what the Marine Corp was like. It was 9 days of Hell on Earth. My sergeant's name was J. C. Morris & we had to call him "Jesus Christ". I learned that I never wanted to be a Marine. After the Devil Pup graduation ceremony my parents took me & my siblings to the beach on our way home. My brothers & sister teased me because I was so muscular. They said I looked like "Popeye". Later that summer, I met my future wife (Linda) at the drive in movie theater. She pretty much ignored me. Her first words to me were: "get lost", but I persevered. We started talking and I got her phone number. We casually dated a couple of times, but talked more often on the phone. She pretty much played hard to get. AFTER HIGH SCHOOL: I worked for about a year in a warehouse of a department store; then I enlisted in the Army: Infantry airborne & volunteered for Vietnam. Linda went to the airport with my mother to see me off. I wanted to serve our country (my dad was a Marine Dive Bomber in WW II); stop the spread of Communism & promote Freedom. I also saw it was chance to see the world. I spent 20 minutes in Hawaii, 2 hours in the Philippines, a year in Vietnam, a week in Australia, 10 minutes in Alaska & a few months in Germany. Needless to say I was naive. By the Grace of God I survived Vietnam with relatively few scratches & returned to California on leave. Linda had faithfully written me while I was away. We had gotten to know one another and fell in love. We saw each other everyday and before I left for Germany we were engaged. When I got to Germany I was made a Tank Commander. While I was away Linda and her mother planned our wedding. The date was set; the plan was for me to take leave, return to California & get married....Expand for more
Then Linda and I would return to Germany to complete my tour of duty. After I had been in Germany 3 or 4 months, I started getting pressure from the 1st Sergeant & the Company Commander to re enlist. I had advanced in rank rapidly while I was in Vietnam. I went from Pvt. First Class to Sergeant E5 in less than 9 months. The Commanding General of the 25th Infantry promoted me to Sergeant and a one star Brigadier General scotch taped the stripes on my arm in a little ceremony. In Germany I was told that I had no chance of promotion unless I re enlisted. I was getting a a lot of pressure so I told them that I would re enlist if I could be a pilot & an officer. They agreed to send me to helicopter school & I would become a Warrant Officer. I told them I wanted to fly planes & jets, so after some discussion they arranged for me to take a flight aptitude test. When I passed the test they were ready for me to re enlist & even offered me a $10,000 re enlistment bonus. But, I had 2nd thoughts & told them it would not be fair for me to re enlist before Linda had a chance to see what Army life would be like. They didn't like that, but it was reasonable, so they left me alone. About 3 months before I was to return to California & marry Linda, I got into a terrible car accident on duty & should have died. I spent 2 months in the hospital and was medevaced back to the USA in a hospital plane. I arrived in California about 3 weeks before our scheduled wedding & I got married on crutches. I was eventually retired from the Army after 3 yrs & 2 days. It took 4 or 5 yrs to get me to walk again normally. I attended Pierce Jr. College for 1 1/2 yrs while working part time at the Woodland Hills Post Office. I had to quit school & my job to have more surgery. After I recovered, I never went back to school. I worked most of my career (40+ yrs) as a Landscape Contractor. I loved the work & diversity of it; loved being self employed and being in the outdoors working with God's Creation. I did not always like some of the government regulations, or some of my clients. But overall, it was a great career & I made some good friends. I retired in April of 2013 due to the economy, but still do some part time consulting. My wife, Linda, worked 15 yrs for LA Unified School District with Special Ed kids. She retired at the end of may 2013. We are both adjusting to being retired. Linda has been doing a lot of baby sitting of our 5 yr old twin granddaughters and sorting through our accumulations. She says so far, being retired is more work & less pay. I have 40 yrs of business stuff to get rid of. We will have been married 45 yrs on Jan 11, 2014. We have 3 wonderful daughters (2 of which are identical twins) & 7 granddaughters (2 of which are identical twins). Linda's grandmother was an identical twin. I have been truly blessed with a beautiful & loyal wife, kids, grand kids and peace with God through Jesus Christ. I am just a sinner saved by God's Grace.
