Stewart's Story

After 30 years my career with BP (heritage Amoco) pipeline is winding down. One of our largest facilities, the Cushing Terminal and Storage facility, was sold in September to Magellan LLP. As BP's manager of the facility I helped Magellan transistion and am now doing Special Assignments until Jan 2012 when I will take my severance and retire. My current assignment is managing a couple of BP Pipelline headquarter areas in the Kansas City area: one in Freeman, Mo and the other in Sugar Creek, Mo. I am on a Temporary Domestic Assignment in Kansas City (Lee's Summit) until around June of 2011 and will probably return to Cushing,Oklahoma for my last special project. Once I retire my wife and I plan to travel the United States. We have a 40 ft Motorhome and look forward to playing golf in all 49 mainland states during the first couple of years of retirement. We are both hackers but enjoy being out on the courses both for the aesthetics and the exercise. At some point in time we will settle down in Texas, near Houston, to be close to the kids and especially the grandkids (currently 6). Sooo...if ya'll see a brown and coral Tiffin Phaeton ( the Carsita) traveling down the road be sure and wave and pull us over and we can share some coffee, or something, and catch up on the past. UPDATE - Well....... the January 2012 date didnt work out. There always seemed to be another "special assignment" that needed some help with. But after 4 extensions to my retirement date I think the company became a little embarrassed to ask again and I finally did retire on June1, 2012. But, with an agreement to come back in 180 days as a consultant and to continue with my current special assignment (Crisis Management/Emergency Response). So.......just getting settled into retirment when another company makes me an offer to consult on a part time basis. I accept on July 1 knowing that my work can be managed from home or the motorhome whereever we are located. So......just getting settled into retirement and consulting when someone comes by and makes an offer on our house which we couldn't refuse.....and they want to close quickly. We had no plans on moving so soon but had thought we would eventually end up in Texas near the kids and grandkiids so we divvied up the furniture between kids and grandkids, packed U-Hauls to deliver it to them and spent most of Ju...Expand for more
ly and August with that angst and sweat of selling a house and finding somewhere to live. So.....not wanting to jump into anything right away we established a one year lease at a campground on Lake Conroe just north of Houston, living in the motorhome and I am hoping to finally get into the retirement "rut" - fish in the morning, golf in the afternoon or ( maybe the otherway around, depending on the temperature) and just sit outside in the evening and enjoy the fresh air and the sunsets.....oh, guess I do have to work periodically but I will try and work that in too, ha. So....if you are down this way give me a call (918 640 8120) and come visit. As someone once said....It IS a wonderful life! So.....back south of Houston again...we built a house in League City, my wife is happier now...she can spread out all her quilting and sewing; meanwhile I try and spend a few days every week or so back up on Lake Conroe at the campground (our one year lease is on its third year, ha) and I do finally get to do some golf and fishing. Still not as much as I had hoped but I guess rather than retiring I have just refused to work full time. We did it again! The suburbs weren't for us so we sold the house and bought a cottage on Lake Conroe, north of Houston. Finally did the empty nester thing and downsized. The cottage is 3 bedrooms so there is a room dedicated to my wife's quilting and, along with the screened in patio, still have room for quests. It's located in the same campground that we have had the motorhome in so still have the amenities: private marina, swimming pool, beach, activity center, plus we have a great lake view location. I think this will be our last move. Uh, though I know I have said that before, ha. Still traveling too. Spent a few weeks in Utah and Colorado last fall and planning an Alabama, Florida trip this summer for a grandson's baseball tournament and a family visit to Disneyworld. Did it! Completed the trip to Alabama and Disneyworld in June and July, then turned around and went back to Alabama with a different set of grandkids in August.. In September we finally gave up the motorhome travel. Over a period of 11 years and 120,000 miles we decided we, and most of the grandkids, ha, had seen pretty much everything and been most everywhere we wanted to go so we sold the motorhome and plan on staying in motels when we travel now.
