Stewart's Story

Life Life is so cool (though it took awhile to get here). Honestly, for me, life really began when I moved into my own place, right after high school was over. Independence is the only way to fly. Met a girl from Watterson during the summer of 1978, and began dating seriously. (Do you remember Watterson?) That didn't last, thank God. Anyway, I worked my way through college first at a tire store on High Street, and later at a union job at the Columbus Dispatch. Sometimes I still get nightmares that I have failed at everything in life, and have to go back there to work in the same circulation department phone room. (Shudder.) I played a lot of lead guitar the first 2 years at Ohio State, but gave it up because I thought graduation might be a better idea. In 1982 I went on Spring break (in Ft. Lauderdale, where else) with some friends, and we decided over vodka lemonades, clubs, the B52s and a cast of new acquaintances that we should all move to California. So we did. I moved to California immediately upon graduating Ohio State. Haven't been back to Ohio since I moved my mother out here about 10 years ago, though I may go back if Whetstone has a 30 year reunion. I started my first "real job" in marketing in San Diego. Dated someone for 4 years, and fought with her the whole time. Got an MBA. Lived close to the beach. That last part was good. Got into working out, buffed up, ran 10ks and marathons, roller bladed, surfed (rarely) and layed out in the sun. A lot. I was invited by a publicist friend to be a guest of the Michael Jackson Bad Tour in Europe, at the height of his fame. Cheryl Crowe was his backup singer. Ask me someday, and I can give you the real dirt... When I finally returned stateside, I 1. broke up with my girlfriend, 2. had my car stolen and 3....Expand for more
lost my job -- (have you seen the movie Stripes?). My reaction? I moved in with an old college buddy in LA. I went to work for one of the world's leading ad agencies, J Walter Thompson. There I did the whole Beverly Hills / bright nights big city thing. And we always wore black. Quit because I hated office politics and wanted to make real money, so I went into commercial real estate and moved back to the beach. Remember the LA riots on TV? Those were my listings burning. Great timing. I starved. Back to advertising. Meantime, I met my wife at one of those California personal development seminar things. You know, where everybody hugs. She was this sweet little Colombian girl, and I introduced her to sushi and the beach. We fell in love, and a few years later got married. Eventually I became VP of marketing at the healthcare ad agency I worked at. I traveled like crazy, did a lot of speaking and writing too. During this time we had 2 kids, currently ages 5 and 8. Cristina (Bug) and Natalie (Snat). They are AWESOME. In 2004 I started an ad agency of my own. Now we have 30 people working and it is fun being the boss. The money is pretty good, too. If you like, you can Google my company, Healthcare Success Strategies. I started playing guitar again a year ago and am in a band at our mega-church. I pitch TV shows to Hollywood for fun - damn near made it on the air 2 years ago. These days I am really a writer, entrepreneur and marketer - my last traditional job was in 1988 back at J Walter Thompson. The best part of my life is my family. If you knew me in high school you would know that I had no idea what a good family life was like. Now I do. Like I said, life is so cool.
