Stratton's Story

Life I graduated from the United States Naval Academy and although I wanted to fly, it turns out I'm color blind so I went into the Supply Corps. I had sea tours on a Ballistic Missile submarine, a Submarine Tender, and a Cruiser. The Navy also sent me to graduate school in Monterey, California (great place if you can afford it!) and let me spend time in some other really nice areas including Groton, Connecticut, San Diego, California and Washington, D.C. Married to Wasson High School classmate Bonnie Long in 1980. We have 2 girls: Morgan, born in January 1995 and Dana, born in December 1997. I retired from the U.S. Navy after 22 years and then transitioned to working part-time as a financial manager and program analyst for the Missile Defense Agency in Washington, D.C. Bonnie also retired after 23 years as a Flight Attendant with American Airlines. We have moved to Madison, Georgia (just 2 months before the September 11th, 2001 terrorist attacks) and have been very happy with the move. Bonnie used to fly the American Airlines Flight #77 trip every week and I worked in the Pentagon. We are both thankful we decided to leave the D.C. area when we did! Even more good news... Small town life is great! Workplace I've dealt with almost every aspect of business and financial management in the Department of Defense, including working at the highest levels for the Chief of Naval Operations developing the Navy's Future Years Defense Plan, down to asking those same folks for more funding as the Business and Financial Manager for a Major Defense Acquisition Program, and even working with Senior Defense and Congressional staffs to resolve issues within several programs. After retiring from the Navy my background with basic engineering and Department of Defense Business and Financial Management put me in a good position to go back and support the government in a consulting position with the Missile Defense Agency, where I had just gained four years of experience. So, the "transition" from the Navy was a smooth one. I enjoyed being able to stay involved in such a dynamic and fast-moving part of the nation's defense. The challenges of missile defense, including the technical hurdles of the mission made eve...Expand for more
ry success that much more rewarding. Until 2009 I was telecommuting (as a Defense Contractor) supporting the Missile Defense Agency, visiting the Washington Offices or Colorado Springs, Colorado Offices once every 4-6 weeks, while living in "America's Best Small Town" (according to at least one travel magazine), here in Madison, Georgia. The small town life was so good I decided to fully retire in November of 2009. My girls are working on their southern accents and we're all enjoying small town life. Our oldest daughter, Morgan, is attending Georgia Tech, and our youngest daughter, Dana, just started at Georgia Tech. Other One photo I've got posted is of the family is from a Christmas 2008 tour of homes at the old "family" home (circa 1822). Morgan and Dana will be the 8th generation to have the home (if I can keep it up long enough for them to inherit it). The girls decided to get in period outfits for the tour and had a great time listening to the family stories and even taking charge of the "toy room" as docents. The house was featured on an episode of HGTV's "If Walls Could Talk" in 2008 and is still showing in reruns every now and then (our 15 minutes of fame). I'm a member (and currently Treasurer) of a local car club, the Country Road Cruisers, of Morgan County, Georgia. We're a small club but host two car shows a year and use all income above the show costs to give back to the local community. We've provided scholarship funds to graduating seniors at the local (county) high school, donated funds to the local Boys & Girls club, provided food and goodie baskets to local shut-ins during the Christmas holiday period, and funds to purchase food for the local food bank and community vegetable garden fund. We have recently created a countryroadcruisers club website (that Classmates won't let me post). My Dad, Colonel Dan McHenry Hicky, USAF, Ret'd, passed away on July 5th, 2010 at the age of 93. Mom passed in late 2012 at age 94. I'm NOT good about checking my Classmates messages, so if you've written a note and I've "ignored" you... it wasn't intentional, but rather... inattentive. I say this because I just discovered several messages from many moons ago that I never read! Oops! Stratton

A little history lesson in our cemetery walk highlighted as the sun crested the horizon this morning.
Took the 612 out for a little "spring fling" today and stopped at a great looking field near Buckhead. Nothing like a spirited drive to get the blood flowing!

Another frosty morning walk. My phone didn’t pick up the glistening frost-tipped grass very well, and the sun is rising earlier every day, so I missed the very early shot that might have shown it better. But, that also mean

Our company produced a LOT of aviators, and more than its share of Supply Corps officers (2 out of a total of 18 from the entire Academy).

Note the yellow Ferrari 365 GTB "Daytona"... a really nice looking car in great shape. I think it is a 1972, but didn't get a chance to talk with the owner.
BMW I-8 with a custom paint that changes colors, depending on the angle of the light/sun. Really something to see! I still like my "standard" white one, but this sure gets your attention!
Really rare original (?) 1966 Ford GT 40.
My morning walk takes me through our local cemetery. This morning I got there before the early fog had burned off.

Sunrise in the Madison Cemetery, with crisp air and gorgeous colors. A beautiful start to the day.
I was still sporting the submarine service beard at our engagement... Bonnie said yes, anyway!!
