Sue's Story

Lot of water under the bridge! After H.S. I went to Univ. of Redlands and graduated with major in Spanish. Worked 2 yrs as clerk-typist at Patton State Hosp., then got a job as Community Worker at Inland Counties Developmental Disabilities Services in San Bernardino (later name changed to Inland Regional Center). Worked and quit there 3 different times, 1976-2000, as Comm. Wkr. w/ name change to Counselor, and later promotion to Sr. Counselo. I worked primarily with Spanish-speaking families, with infants to adults with dev. disabilities, and later high-risk infants. Also worked in the Intake unit. During the breaks from Reg. Ctr I worked as an Infant Development Specialist, doing in-home teaching with dev. disabled or high-risk infants and their parents/caregivers. In the meanwhile I married and had two daughters, and later divorced. I did some traveling around the U.S., both before and during marriage. Met a lot of interesting people, and made some wonderful friends. I've always enjoyed sewing and crafts, and finally found my niche in beadwork and jewelry-making, which I do intensively to this day. In 2000 I left Calif. (something I never thought I would do) and moved to Maine (definitely never thought I would live where the winters are COLD and SNOWY). However, I found that I love Maine and the way of life. I remarried to a wonderful man. We live in a tiny town NW of Bangor, in a house surrounded by trees set way back from the road. Lots of privacy and quiet, a very peaceful setting. My first job in Maine was teaching Spanish in H.S.; those kids were way different than we were! I did this only 1 yr., and although it was an "interesting" experience, I have no desire to repeat it. Later I got a job doing case ...Expand for more
management (same job I had at Reg. Ctr.) at an agency serving persons with HIV/AIDS. That was truly an interesting job, in a positive way, and I learned a lot. For the most part I liked the clients, and I loved case management. Life had burned me out by then, and I only worked there 16 mo. I wasn't doing my best work, and I also had differences with the director. I finally quit, and since then have not worked a regular job. I make jewelry and sell in some shops and at craft shows. I work with a good friend who also makes jewelry, and we added "wearable fiber art," fancy name for knitted, crocheted, and felted goods which we embellish with beading etc. The economy has really affected jewelry sales, so we hoped that maybe the fiber items would be considered more practical and sell more easily. My two daughters are now grown. My older daughter still lives in Calif. (now Oak Glen) and works as a field biologist. She went to UCR and received a bachelor's in biology. She got married last year, and her husband joined the Army after being in ROTC during college. My younger daughter moved to Maine and lived with my husband and me. She graduated from high school here and then attended the University of Southern Maine. She just graduated this year with a bachelor's in psychology, and works in direct care in group homes for developmentally and/or mentally disabled people. She lives in Portland, ME. So that's my life so far, in the sort of short version. Not too exciting, but many interesting times and people. Lot of good, some bad times, but I've learned a lot from all of it. I feel older (my body esp. likes to remind me) and wiser, but in many ways I feel the same as when I was young. Except I've lost much of my shyness!
