Sue's Story

A postscript to the biographical sketch below: Am now on my third interim ministry, helping congregations in transition prepare for their next called minister. This work has taken me from Danbury CT, to Columbia MO, to Las Cruces, NM. All of these are wonderful small cities to live in, with vibrant Unitarian Universalist congregations. On New Year's Day 2012, I got married again, after having been single for over 30 years. Chuck Campbell is someone I've known since 1976 (I met him and his late wife in Boston), and our marriage bears witness to what Ann Landers once said about love being "friendship that has caught fire." I was in the midst of my Columbia ministry, so we spent some time commuting back and forth between Albuquerque (where Chuck has lived since 1979) and Missouri. We're grateful for Southwest Airlines and its non-stop flights between ABQ and Kansas City! In July 2012 I moved to Albuquerque to be with Chuck, and in the summer of 2013 was asked to help with a difficult church situation in Las Cruces, 230 miles to the south. We commute about once a week down I-25, rediscovering each time why New Mexico is called the Land of Enchantment. Am looking forward to coming to the reunion next October! Blessings to all, Sue Redfern-Campbell Written on Twelfth Night (January 5) 2014 Biographical sketch written in the fall of 2008. After graduating from Hanover Park High School, I went to the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. There I majored in philosophy, got involved in student politics, and wrote for the Michigan Daily. After graduation from the U of M, I moved to Boston, where I ended up spending 24 years of my life, in two separate installments. The first was from 1968 to 1985. I started out by working as a secretary, and then went to BU law school. After seven years in legal practice, I began to get a sense that ...Expand for more
I might be called to ministry, and entered Harvard Divinity School in 1980. In 1985, I graduated from Div. School and was ordained to the Unitarian Universalist ministry. My first assignment took me to Vancouver, BC, where I spent seven wonderful years. From there I went on to serve churches in Los Angeles and Salt Lake City, coming back to the Boston area in 1999 to serve a congregation in a small town west of the city. In the fall of 2006 I took a break from ministry, and went to live with the Community of the Holy Spirit, a women's religious community in the Episcopal church. One highlight of living in community was being part of their environmental ministry, which included working on a small organic farm. After 20 months with the community, I concluded that my true calling was still parish ministry. If you'd like to read something about my experience with the women's community, and my decision to leave, I've written a blog about it. Classmates.com won't allow me to post the blog address here, but if you google it I'm sure you can find it. Two months ago I began an interim ministry at a small Unitarian Universalist congregation in western Connecticut, and am enjoying it immensely! Was able to attend the HP reunion picnic this past weekend - the very first HP reunion I've been able to attend since graduation 44 years ago! So far I haven't mentioned anything about family life. I was married for ten years, mostly during the 70s, but never had any children. I do have five nieces and nephews, though, and four grand-nieces and nephews (2 of each). They are scattered all the way across the US, but I enjoy visiting them when I can. I also make it a point to stay in touch with my father, who is 87 (my mother died in 1991), and with my two sisters. Betsy (HP '67) lives in Iowa, and Mary (graduated from another high school) is in the Poconos.
