Sue's Story

I grew up on Seventh Avenue, bet 3 and 4 street. My father owned the laundry store called Sing Lee. I went to PS 77 and I loved Mrs. Schmidt who was my 5 and 6 grade teacher. She turned me on to books and am still reading more than I watch movies. It took me 20 years to gain my bachelor from Brooklyn College because of the travelling around the world because of my husband's job. I have 4 grandchildren and one is on the way. I am retired now and spend my days doing cross-stitch > designing my own as well as painting and studying Mandarin. My Chinese was not always great. I love to watch 3-4 star foreign films from anywhere. I would like classmates and other friends to contact me. UPDATE: 6/2/1017 I live in Stafford, VA. This is our fifth home in Virginia. My husband and I are both retired and we were hoping to move back to up north to be closer to my son. But that means giving up Kaiser Permanente. They took care of my health since 1975. They are wonderful and doctors are the best. I work as as a graphic designer and I do unique art pieces. I wanted to go to law school and was accepted at Georgetown but had to drop out in my second year due to various health problems. Of course, my second love was always art. I worked on the JHS 51 yearbooks as well as being art editor for JJ. I remember Mrs. Waldas. She was the best art teacher I ever had. One time, I met a psychic on the street and she looked at my palm and said I would do well in art although she saw no law school. Well, I guess it was true. As I think back to those school years, I believe I went through school blind -- meaning, I had no idea what the SAT was for, no idea what the Iowan test was for, lots of other things. I didn't know you had to prepared for these tests so I just rolled with the waves and somehow got through. While traveling -- I took my first college class in 1971 at Univ of Md overseas program. It took me 20 years to complete my liberal Arts ed. I graduated from Brooklyn and I felt good about accomplishing one of my goals. I attended Fashion Institute for Advertising/Graphics but I had to stop because we moved to Germany. So my education was stop and go. ...Expand for more
We also lived in Saudi Arabia. Boy, that was very interesting. Their lives are so different. We lived on an American compound at KKMC. My husband worked for the Corps of Engineers then. We had a chauffeur drive us whenever we needed to go off the compound. We all had houseboys who did our cleaning once a week. We paid his going rate -- 15 Riyals which amounted to $5. I felt bad because I felt I was cheating him but that is all he wanted. We did not have to cover ourselves from to toe. We were allowed American dress as long as it was very, very conservative. No open necks, must have long sleeves, loose pants or skirts. The American compound had western style houses -- villas. It consisted of 3 bedrooms, family room, living and dining rooms, kitchen and 2 baths. The temperature rose to about !20 degrees F in the summer and it was as low as 40 degrees F in winter nights. We often got sandstorms barreling through the compound. One time, it was so bad that the whole house was filled with sand in the morning. It seeped through the doors and windows. From that incident, I used duck tape to seal up the windows and doors to keep the sand out. It worked. I now have 2 teenage grandchildren who will be attending college next year. I have a grandchild who will be going to an art technical high school. All my grandchildren can draw very well but so far, only Katie is pursuing that dream. One wants to study biology and the other wants to study science and computers. My youngest grandchild, Ileana, is a real pip. She is 7 yet she acts like an adult and demands like one. She definitely has her own mind. One time, her mother put her on the phone and the first thing she said was "What do you want to talk to me about?!" She has 2 older brother and sister and I guess she feels she can act as they do. My husband is dabbling in real estate. If you know someone who is moving to VA, maybe you can refer them to Bill Eng, Long & Foster--Annandale Office. We will be celebrating our 52nd Anniversary. Where does the time go? As for me, I am dealing with many health problems and every year, it is something new. I can cope if I want to go on living. That's all for now.
