Susan's Story
I always wanted to be a doctor when I grew up. My friends thought that was a good idea, but it'd be difficult. As it turns out, I changed my mind anyway. I got a B.S. in Biology, concentrating on Biochemistry. It was interesting, but didn't lead into my career. In college I had a great time partying as well as studying and working. One thing I really loved was tennis and I was still playing until my older son went away to college.
I actually ended up being a Systems Programmer working with IBM mainframe operating systems (Assembler Language). That may sound boring, but it could be really fun until you had to stay up for 48 hours straight installing a new operating system. Working for a bank meant that the computer couldn't be off-line from Monday morning until Saturday morning!!
Somewhere in there I got married (at 24) and divorced three years later. Gave it a good try, but there you go! Stayed single for five years and got married again; this one is still barely limping along. Marriage is a funny thing; I'll bet most of you know.
In the mean time, I moved five times in 12 years, but have thankfully been in one place for the last nine; even if it is the Houston area. The weather stinks; but I can say I've lived through a hurricane (Hurricane Ike-Sept. 2008). I had no power, water, or phone; and that was one of the good situations!.
Besides Bakersfield, I've lived in Spring, Texas (Houston area); Trumbull, Connecticut (absolutely wonderful); Sugarland, Texas (Houston area again); Denver, Colorado; and now The Woodlands, Texas (again, the Houston area). At least we have a "local" football ...Expand for more
and basketball team.
I've actually been a mom for the last 19 years, but I haven't spent it sitting around on my butt. I've coached soccer, been a Cub Scout den leader, gone on campouts, trips to the skatepark, science fairs and various other bizarre things.
The one thing that has been consistant over the last 19 years has been teaching children's Sunday school. I would have never imagined doing that in a thousand years, but life is funny. Now I as the Children's Education Leader getting curriculum, doing lesson plans, camp events, Christmas programs and all kinds of stuff like that. The neat thing is that it's all volunteer work so I have alot of freedom!
My best friends now would say that I'm kind and quiet and generous, but they didn't know me back between marriages. Those were wild days (and nights); I was still kind and generous, but there were definitely some loud and frenzied experiences. But that's all I'm going to reveal right now!
I said earlier that I loved tennis and that is still true, but one of the other funnest things I ever did was windsurf. I never tried sailing a catamaran, but would love to.
I haven't said much about my kids, but let me just mention them now. Andrew is 21 and a junior at Boston University studying International Affairs and languages (he's the class of 2011). Joey is 17 and a junior at The Woodlands High School (class of 2011). His favorite subjects are math and football; he plays Wide Receiver on JV football and is a total jock!
That's all for now. I'll write more later. I hope the rest of you Highland HS alumni will write a little about yourselves.
