Susan's Story
I lived in Manhattan Beach after I was married and had one son. I was divorced a few years later. I lived in Huntington Beach at that time. I remarried in 1978 and helped raise a few family additions (6 of 7 stepchildren).
We moved from Huntington Beach to Oregon (just outside of Eugene) on what I thought was a huge piece of land - 5 acres. We couldn't stand the continuing growth in Calif. I went back to school through Linfield College continuing adult ed through 1994.
My husband & I raised sheep and eventually purchased 67+ acres with lots of barn space and an old (1910) house. I actually worked with the livestock and exhibited them throughout the Oregon/Washington/Idaho/California state and county fairs. Made good money, enjoyed my time in the summers and during lambing season. I received many honors based on the breeding & exhibitions I participated in. I had to sell the sheep after I had ovarian cancer (1998)
We remodeled our home from 1992 to 2006. We leased our land to a local grass seed farmer. We then sold 13 acres to a daugher. She started a nursery business and planted about 1000 blueberry plants. I help out when she needs me. I enjoy our rural setting and the joy of not having another house next to mine. I have learned to enjoy the rain, change of seasons and the beauty here. We are 2 hours from ski areas, the ocean and the high desert, big city Portland.
I worked in the accounting field for most of my life. The most enjoyable job was as the Sr. Accountant for a shoppin...Expand for more
g mall - still had deadlines but what a place to wander and look (and shop)
My son received approval to build a home on our land, and I am looking forward to this event to happen in June 09. The original plan was for him to be here to help with the farm and my husband who was becoming less able to do much. He will be a blessing, along with his wife and daughter.
We purchased a time share in Nuevo Vallarta, Mexico, about 9 miles from Puerto Vallarta. I traveled for about 6 years with family before I could get my husband to go with me. We traveled at least once a year. Our last trip together was in October with our best friends. I also traveled with 2 daughters and a granddaugher in early Feb. We enjoyed traveling - Yosemite, Yellowstone, Washington, Idaho, Kentucky, Mexico, and of course California. I was in Lake Forest in April and was in Huntington Beach in June for a granddaughers wedding. How can I be old enough for that!
My husband and I were together for 42 years. He passed away in Feb 08. Our youngest daughter lives with me and the other daughter is next door. They are both of great comfort.
Oregon has a lot offer, besides rain! We have a lot of beautiful vineyards, some of which are within 8 miles from our home. We seldom have snow in our area, but the ski resorts are all within 1 1/2 hrs from my home. There are a lot of areas for those who like cross country. We have a lot of lakes, a rough but beautiful coast. I don't think I could ever live any place other than this!
