Susan's Story

Where has the time gone? After leaving Willowbrook at the end of my junior year, I went to the University of Illinois at Chicago Circle for a year and then transferred to the George Washington University in Washington, D.C., where I earned my B.A. in 1974. My husband, Tim Sullivan, and I were married in 1972. Following college, I worked for a couple of years in Washington for non-profit groups on housing and food policy. We moved to the Seattle area in 1976 so that Tim could attend law school. We lived there for 45 years and are still glad we decided to raise our family there. It has been a gorgeous place to live, with a moderate climate, many social and cultural amenities, and a culture that truly values families and communities. Our daughter, Sarah, was born in 1978. Our oldest son, Kevin, was born in 1986 while I was in graduate school at the University of Washington (MBA '88). Matthew arrived in 1990. We thought our family was complete at that point, but as they say, life is what happens while you are making other plans! One of my first cousins died in 1995, leaving two young sons, whom we subsequently adopted. Joey is four months younger than Matt, and Danny was born in 1992. So I am the mother of five kids--something that I never, in my wildest dreams, ever imagined would happen! Our daughter and her family lived only a 10 minute drive from us until...Expand for more
recently. Granddaughter Natasha turns 14 in August of 2023 and will be entering high school in the fall; her little brother Henry is 9 in June and a third grader. Our son Kevin and his wife have four children: Madalyn, age 7; Abigail, age 5; two year old Tanner; and baby Harper, born January 5, 2023. They live in rural northeastern Washington, where Kevin is a Physician Assistant and wife Ashley is an ER nurse. Our middle two sons live in the Seattle. Dan, the youngest, lives in Orange County, CA with his wife, Keiko Miyata. My career has focused on health and long term care issues. I've been an operations manager (three times) as well as a planner, project manager, consultant, and interim CEO. Tim and I are both retired and have enjoyed traveling in the U.S. and overseas. Just before the pandemic broke, we bought a house in Clarkdale, AZ, about 20 miles south of Sedona. We delayed moving into our AZ home until July of 2021 in order to help our daughter and her family with remote schooling while the schools were closed. Now that we are settled in, we love it here! We feel very blessed with family, friends, and satisfying careers. It has been very rewarding to see our children grow and develop into interesting people with their own lives. I can't wait to find out what's in store for us as life continues to unfold. Whatever it is, it won't be boring!
