Susan's Story
Life:
My husband, Bill, and I just celebrated 35 years of marriage on Labor Day.
Am now living in Fairfield, Ohio. Was going to loseing home because Bill had not had steady employment for the last three years. At same time, mom-in-law has fallen twice at her home in 2016 (Bill's dad passed away in 2000 and Bill is an only child), and we suspect it was from a stroke each time. She cannot care for herself now and has been diagnosed with dementia. He had been taking care of her by himself since February. Left my position as Head Cashier at the local Home Depot, sold our home, put all household goods in storage, left daughters, grandson, and our 14-year-old dog behind. Oldest daughter and I drove the 24 hour trip late July and she returned to Colorado after a 5 day stay; by plane. The 14-year-old dog has since died of liver problems January 3.
When I had worked for a physician, I had always wondered how nurses aides at nursing homes got the back injuries they sustained when working with the elderly/senior population and now I know why. If Mom (Bill's mom) doesn't feel like walking all the way to her wheelchair, she will just drop and we have to catch her. She has also done that when just one of us is holding her up & I am just glad we know how to catch her properly without seriously hurting ourselves, but we have pulled quite a few muscles.
So that is where I/we are at this point in time. All we can do is take life day by day and try to make her as comfortable as possible.
Have also had to find a job. The proceeds from the sale of our home is quickly running out because of car insurance, cell phone bill and the storage space in Colorado. Will be working as a receptionist at Meadowbrook Care Center in Montgomery. That's where my mom lived before she passed away in 2009.

e of the complications from her type of dementia. She was surrounded by family; Bill, me, Kira and Kaylyn. Short and sweet funeral/visitation was held November 8. She will be dearly missed, but at the same time, we are glad she is finally at peace and no longer in pain. The type of dementia Mom has was vascular, caused by a brain bleed that happened Heaven knows when. It also caused constricting of the muscles & tendons in her arms and legs, which ended up being very painful for her.
Not sure where we are going to "land" after all is taken care of with Mom's estate. Oldest daughter is wanting to move back to Ohio since it is so expensive living in Denver, CO. We shall see.

Update: Bill obtained a new job December 2019 in Butler, KY (a very small farm town). I became a full time receptionist at Meadowbrook in August 2019 in order to earn extra money to fix up Bill's late parents home in order to sell. Financial complications arose after my "retirement" in May 2020 when husband's car needed major repairs and took almost all of those savings earmarked for home repairs, so I went back to Meadowbrook part time to help with the newly formed position of Visitation Facilitator (monitoring and scheduling outdoor visits in mid-September to early October) but a new batch of of positive COVID-19 tests ended that position. I stayed on in hopes of going back to indoor visits, but every week there were more positive tests. In order for me to earn my pay, I was helping a variety of managers with their paperwork and next thing I know, I'm working full-time again! :D During that time, I re-injured my back and had to finally retire at the end of November 2020. I did earn enough money to recoup the money we lost and have plans on moving late spring or summer to Kentucky. Somewhere no more than 30 minutes from Bill's place of work. Lots of towns to choose from!
