Susan's Story

1975 does seem like yesterday in some ways and so far away in others. As for me I did what I call the Southern California thing, Orange Coast College after University High School graduation. There were so many Uni. High students there I felt like is was an extention of high school. Next I went to Long Beach State, followed by UCI. I had my AA degree, bit it was getting harder to work and go to school, so I quit school, enjoyed life, worked, lived in South Laguna. I took a summer school class at UCI in Computer Graphics and my boyfriend at the time (my husband today), said "you might think of going back to school and get your degree. I think you might be happy as you attend the UCLA sports events and hang out with my friends who all graduated from college and openly talk about their college experiences. It is fine with me that you are who you are, but the question is will you feel bad about yourself if you do not finish college". He knew me very well, that one day I would look back and regret I did not finish and get my degree. I did so back to school - Chapman University, Orange and got my degree in Communications, Public Relations. I graduated almost 10 years after graduation high school. I am so glad I did that even though it was very hard to go back to school after being away from the classroom setting and into real life. Waikiki was the spot I was married to Carl Marscellas after dating 7 years. We married in 1987 both of us for the first time. We had our first child, Kyle in 1988 while living in Corona Del Mar. 1990 we moved to Corral de Tierra, about 15miles outside of the Salinas city center. I was offered a job in Public Relations for Salinas Valley Memorial Healthcare System. 1992 our daughter Molly was born and there you have it the typical American family with one boy and one girl. Kyle is at UCI going to school and loves living in Orange County. He does not know why we ever left. I miss Orange County still a lot today, but, I love the are we now live in with all the ag land and nature, open spaces, Carme, Monterey, Big Sur, and San Francisco only 2 hours away. Molly is in the 10th grade attending an all girls school. She can hardly wait to go to college, and hopes to attend an Art school like RISD. Time will tell. I am still at SVMHS, I never thought I would be at the same job for 18 years, and hoping to work here until age 6...Expand for more
5! My parents are still living in the same house in Newport Beach, stop by and say hello, they would love it. My brothers, Tom is married and living on Maui, happy and doing fine. Roger is on Kauai, married with two small children, Hana age 8, and Hili, age 4. He works two jobs and works on cars to keep up with his lifestyle. It cost so much to live in the Hawaiian Islands, but they both love it over there, and we love to go visit them. Humanitarian missions are one of my favorite things to be part of. There is a medical team from SVMHS and we partner with Assist Internationl and we go all over the world delivering and setting medical equipment. Places we have been, Cuba, China (3 times), Africa (2 times), Tibet, Romanian, Mexico, Hungary to name a few location we have helpped. I have been part of this group for about 10 years and love it more with each trip we take. If you go to Assist International (Scotts Valley, CA) website you will see all the fantastic things they are doing. One of the highlights in my life was after a hospital install of an ICU unit in Tanzania we went to Rawanda for R&R. We hiked up into the forest to see the mountain gorillas. Words can not express what an over the top exciting experience that was. We are talking 12 inches away from us...wow, who was in the zoo then, us or them? It felt like us. It is now hard for me to go to the zoo and see a gorilla in that setting. I think they need to be free and protected. If only we could stop the killing of htese human like animals. When you look into their eyes in the wild, you will never forget that feeling...ever. If you can, go for a hike to mounatin gorillas, it will be one of the best things you ever do, I promise. Reunions...I have only attended the 10 year reunion, I worry no one would remember me! I do wish there would be a reunion for the first 4 years - 1972, 1973, 1974, & 1975. Now that one I would not miss, we were all there at the same time, and the first graduation class - the first four year graduating class. Just an idea. I did see photo from the 20 year reunion and everyone looked so good, the class aged well. I think that is more than enough information about the life of Susan Hanks Marscellas.
