Susan Brown:

CLASS OF 1970
Tucson, AZ

Susan's Story

I'm still dancing, though now with my husband Willie. After Catalina, I went to school in San Diego, England and graduated from San Francisco State College with a degree in philosohy and comparative world religions. This lucrative investment paid off in a variety of endeavors - counseling, running a bookstore, technical editor and most recently substitute teaching. After college I nmoved to Kansas City, got married, had a daughter Alexis, got divorced and moved back to Tucson -all in three years. Six years later I met my husband Willie, a retired electrical engineer now, had another daughter Kiona and a son Noah with the luxury of being a stay-at-home mom. I spent my time working politically and socially in my kids' schools, volunteering in the classroom and raising havoc with TUSD. When Noah hit middle school, I went back to work as a substitute yeacher for six years - the most fun I've ever had. I love the kids and the variety. We both retired a few years ago and I got involved with Iskashitaa Refugee Harvesting Network, my current passion. We harvest excess fruit and produce (70,000 pounds last year)from people's yards, gardens and farms and distribute it among refugee families here in Tucson. I have made hun...Expand for more
dreds of new friends from all over the world and eat very well! Friends and family are my focus other than Iskashitaa. Alexis, 30, and her husband Mario live in town with my grandson Zekai,6 - my wild thing! She's a professional cook, currently nannying for two babies and planning to teach prenatal yoga classes in the spring. My daughter Kiona - 21- is a student at University of the Arts in Philadelphia, majoring in modern dance education. She also teaches yoga, currently with a middle school and an artists coop. She'll graduate next year. My son Noah wil graduate this year from Tucson High and plans to go into 3-D computer graphics, starting off at Pima College. My husband Willie comes from a family with 12 siblings, so we do alot of family entertaining with 40-some extended fmaily members in town and a new generation cropping up with 6 new additions this last year. My dad, stepmom and mom are all here and kickin', so we're busy all the time. Willie and I go dancing several times a month, so we'd love to hook up with others who like to cut a rug. I spend most if the rest of my time with refugees, harvesting, advocating and learning about their cultures and families. Life is full and rich - how about yours?
