Susan's Story

Life has had its ups and downs these past few years. After I retired as a school administrator in 2008, my husband and I traveled throughout the country, visiting every state and many national parks. My husband of 43 years passed away in June, 2014. Our daughter, Sara Kate, married in Aug. and moved with her husband to Singapore. They recently presented me with my first grandchild and I was able to be there for the blessed event. I have moved into a condo and am trying to find my new normal. I hope that we will manage to come together for our 50th Class Reunion in a couple of years. Hopefully, the Class of '67 members who remained in the area will be able to make it happen. My memories of high school are probably a bit hazy from age and distance, but they are mostly good. The bad ones, as I remember, were earning a D in Latin I and in Chemistry! Here's hoping our paths may cross again one of these days soon. >>> Addendum: I've been trying to figure out how this site works and I might be on to something! I left a message in my Profile Notes asking classmates and friends to share funny stories from our days at Pasco High as a way of reconnecting. Then I realized that it might not be so easy. I have found that this section "Story" has a fair amount of space, so this might be the way to share our humorous stories. This section of course would make the sharing public, so it must be considerate and approved by anyone who is named. I will begin the sharing with a story that happened on homecoming night, 1966. My friend, Jan Burnett, who has okayed this share, and I decided that, as seniors, we wanted to place our initials on the wall behind the parking lot at school after the game. This was partly due to the fact that I had painted the paper goal post banner that the team ran through entering the field and I had 2 gallons of left over red and black enamel paint. So we hatched a plan. Jan would drive us to the game in her parents' car and, as I was in the band and wearing my gorgeous black wool uniform, we would bring some clothes to change into for our escapade. So when the game ended, we went in search of a dark back road where we could change clothes and then go paint our initials on the wall. Well, we found wh...Expand for more
at appeared to be a great spot and, as the engine idled, were in the middle of undressing when suddenly headlights appeared off in the distance! We waited a bit to see if the headlights took a different direction, and to our horror, they didn't. So, in a panic, we started trying to get our clothes back on. As the other vehicle neared ours, Jan hit the gas and we went careening down a dark dirt road. In short order the car began to fishtail and suddenly went up an embankment and came to an abrupt stop. And, as we tried to assess what had just happened, the other vehicle approached us and stopped within feet of our vehicle. We were terrified as we couldn't see anything but a blinding flashlight! Of course, there stands a police officer rapping on the window. Visions of being hauled to jail were spiraling through my brain. Jan and I, mostly dressed by now, rolled down the windows to try to answer his questions. Muttering and stuttering, we made a feeble attempt to explain why we were out on that dark deserted road at that hour of the night. I have to say, all these years later, the officer was very kind. He asked if we were o.k. and then proceeded to help us get the car back on the road. He suggested that we go home and followed us out to the highway. Of course, all the way home we were thinking that someone was probably calling our parents to report the incident. Nevertheless, we were grateful to pull into my yard and both breathed a huge sigh of relief. Well, that is until I reached into the back seat to get my belongings and saw that the gallons of paint had fallen over in the incident and there was a gallon of fresh black enamel paint streaming across the lovely red carpet in Jan's parents' car. Being almost midnight, Jan decided that she would deal with it in the morning. She went home and went to bed. When she woke up the next day she found out that her father had taken his car to be serviced. When the serviceman went to vacuum the car he was very concerned about the wet paint all over the carpet. When Jan's father returned there was a lot of explaining to do. I have to say, our senioritis took a big hit after that. Serious penalties were applied at home and, I would say, we both became much older overnight!
