Susan's Story
Life
After high school, went to UWM. Degree in four years, became registered medical technologist. Married Ed Walkowiak from Bay View and had son Andrew Walkowiak (now 44, married, lives in Milw. area, has four daughters). Ed and I split up in the mid-70s and I resumed my maiden name - forever; around that time I became a singer (YES!); sang in Milwaukee Florentine Opera Company for a while. Met a lawyer (Jim Hecker), married him, moved to Washington, D.C. area in 1979. o had a daughter, now 33. In my late 40s, retired from singing and went to grad. school in the counseling field. Later, as director of a national cancer advocacy organization, I have written a book on cancer causation, which has received attention from press and from a committee of the U.S. Senate. I also supervised a national counseling/referral hotline and worked with cancer survivors by running support groups. Retired in 2006.
Still married to Jim; still friends with Louise Stevenson (Lori Petersen) and we still call each other "Cheech"!
