Susan's Story
Life
I used to be able to say that I lived in Lexington for half of my life, but as I get older, that's no longer true. After 2 years at Eastern Kentucky University, I entered the U.S. Navy and was stationed in Washington, DC for 5 years. That's where I met and married my husband (19 years ago). Our daughter, Amanda, was born in Alexandria, VA. Soon after, we moved to Murfreesboro, TN where we completed degrees in Social Studies Education. I then went on to receive an MEd in Curriculum and Supervision at Peabody College at Vanderbilt. My son, Christian, was born in Nashville, TN as I completed my degree. I taught at an Academic Magnet High School for 2 years and then moved to Durham, NC where I taught for 2 years. While in Durham, I was asked to travel to Bosnia-Hercegovina immediately after the Dayton Peace Accords to educate teachers to teach for Democracy. e Center for Civic Education in Calabasas, CA. I've been here 8 years with my family. Although Calabasas is my base, I travel all over the United States to universities, including Vanderbilt, Harvard, James Madison, and U of Alaska,to set up professional development institutes for teachers on the Constitution and Bill of Rights. This past year, I've cut my travel (down to 50,000 miles per year) so I can spend more time with my family. I'm fortunate to have a national network of consultants that are happy to trvael in my place. My daughter will start Sweet Briar College Fall 2004 (on a merit scholarship) so I will find many reasons to be in VA when I can. My son starts high school (at 13; he skipped a year of school) Fall 2004 and my husband will continue teaching middle school in Encino, CA. We live 8 miles inland from Malibu Beach (in the mountains surrounding) and do enjoy being Californians. I'd love to hear from past friends and classmates.
