Susan's Story

My family moved from San Anselmo to Redding in July of 1963, and when I entered Enterprise High School that September, I was a very shy and very scared junior. On the first day of school, a number of students noticed I was new, introduced themselves, helped me navigate the campus, and answered any questions I had. WOW, their reception was totally unexpected and really wonderful! THANK YOU, EVERYONE!!! I found EHS a very friendly, welcoming, fun environment, and I only have good memories of my two years there . . . with the exception of having my lunch period scheduled for second period. That was not good! I wasn't ready to leave Redding for a four year college, so I went to Shasta College for an A.A. degree. Next stop was UC-Davis, where I earned a B.A. in Psychology. Then it was back up the valley to Chico State for a teaching credential. My student teaching was done in a beautiful, four-room school in the pine trees in the tiny town of Cohasset, and I'm sure that setting contributed to the peacefulness of the students and faculty on that campus. After applying to 68 different San Francisco Bay Area school districts (there was a glut of teachers in 1971), I stumbled upon an opening in an East Bay school district just 10 days before school started. I found this job via perseverance and stubbornness -- and being in the right place at the right time! From the peaceful, country campus in the pine trees to all the challenges at the asphalt campus in a city . . . I mostly enjoyed teaching 4th and 5th grades . . but what a learning curve it was! My meager teacher's salary combined with my husband's was just enough to put us in a higher tax bracket, which meant we were essentially paying for me to go to work. So, my teaching career ended after only five years. I then spent many years volunteering in my community for the benefit of Packard Children's Hospital at Stanford (formerly Children's Hospital at Stanford). After our two daughters arrived, my volunteer hours were spent in their classrooms and schools. I found volunteering very interesting and very fulfilling. Most importantly, I was able to give back . . . but I also developed some wonderful friendships and some skills I wouldn't have otherwise had the opportunity to learn. In other words, I found the benefits of volunteerism to go both ways, and I highly recommend getting involved! My husband is a patent/trademark attorney in private practice. Our daughters are 34 and 29. Granted, social networking on the internet isn't something I'm totally comfortable doing, but it seems if we stick our necks out and participate in these websites, we ought to communicate!! I would love to hear from you!! ___________________________________________________________ I attended two 50th high school reunions!!! t with my dear friend from third grade, Deb McGarr. We were both particularly glad to see some of the Sleepy Hollow kids, but we were also disappointed that very few attended. I didn't graduate from Drake, so I wasn't surprised that I felt "out of it" and like I didn't really "belong" at this reunion . . . but nevertheless, I'm glad I attended. ENTERPRISE HIGH SCHOOL'S 50TH REUNION - CLASS OF 1965 September 18-20, 2015 in Redding, CA Mike Boehme, Chair My husband, Ted, joined me for this reunion, and it didn't totally surprise me that he thoroughly enjoyed meeting my friendly EHS classmates!! They made him feel very welcomed all weekend long ... Friday night's "Meet and Greet" -- Saturday morning's tour of EHS (has the campus ever changed!) -- Saturday evening's cocktails and dinner -- Sunday's picnic for all 50+ years EHS graduates. I had an absolutely wonderful time meeting classmates again after all these years. Some I literally hadn't seen in 50 years, and I found it very special, emotional, and touching to see them again. I sure hope we can meet again sometime in the next couple of years ... while we are still able. ___________________________________________________________ It's now January 5, 2023. Happy New Year, Everyone! I hope this finds you in good health, financially comfortable, peaceful, surrounded by the love of family and friends . . . and doing whatever you can to help make our country's democracy stabile. I also hope you have been/are able to avoid Covid, needless to say. Some of you are super-conservative folks, I know, and for one reason or another "don't believe in Covid vaccinations" -- so you probably haven't gotten any/all vaccinations and boosters. Please rethink this attitude AND GET VACCINATED -- for your safety and the safety of the rest of us. Thank You Very Much. Yikes, my profile picture was taken in 2012 when I was 65. How can it be that 10 years have already passed?!? I'll break down one of these days and update the photo because I sure do look a lot older now. Having dealt with many of life's challenges in the interim, particularly during these last three years, I'm very grateful for every wrinkle and every birthday! :-) My husband, Ted, is 81 and has (finally!) retired from practicing patent/trademark law for 55 years. Our daughters are now 38 and 33. Our 38 year old was married in Massachusetts in 2021; their wedding had to be postponed for a year because of you-know-what. A couple of months after their wedding, they made the big move from Cambridge, MA, to 30 minutes away from us, and we are absolutely thrilled!!! She had lived in the Boston area for 14 years, and our son-in-law for 16 years, so this was a big decision and change for them. They are really enjoying the Bay Area and do not miss snow at all!! Our 33 year old lives in Oklahoma and is busy with her passion, horses. All My Best! Stay Safe! Stay Well!
