Steven's Story
I should note that I didn't actually graduate from York H.S. I joined Classmates to see if I could find some of my friends that I would have graduated with had my family not moved away from Elmhurst in 1965. It was fun to go through the 1970 York H.S. yearbook and find familiar names like Wayne Pilz, Robert Hay, Clifford Counsell, Phillip Nemchock, Keith Mendenhall, Perry Deutsch, Mike Saviola, and Bill Carney. Gayle Grieger was my first crush, though she never knew it because I was terrified of girls at the time. I remember Nancy Ticshler, Debbie Blanchfield, and Kathy Meske. I remember John Niemeyer and Jimmy Thon from Madison School, Jackson School and Bryan Junior High School. Does anyone remember Mr. Gervase a 6th grade teacher at Jackson School who would teach us words in Japanese if we finished our work early? Do you remember Miss. England or Mrs. Bovis? I was the nerd who wore glasses, drew pictures of space vehicles, and was somewhat athletic at the time. I received a patch and certificate from President Kennedy's Council on Physical Fitness. I loved Elmhurst and hated to leave it when our family moved to Madison, Wisconsin in 1965. I had always hoped to graduate from York H.S. In 1967 my Father's work once again required us to move, this time to Stevensville, (Southwest) Michigan. I've stayed in this area for all of my adult life and now live in nearby Berrien Springs with my Wife, Kim. I married late in life (2007) and neither one of us has ever wanted kids. Our 3 German Shepherds and 3 cast-off Cats keep us well entertained. We paddle (canoe and kayak) local rivers for fun and like to travel. For now we're experimenting with various Caribbean islands. I've scanned and posted some of my pictures from the good ole days. You guys are...Expand for more
in them, check em out! Not sure of all of the teacher's names. How about a trip down memory lane? Do you remember when Ned Locke (Ringmaster Ned) came to one of the yearly fairs we had at Jackson School? We got Mr. Ned because the budget wouldn't allow for Bozo. How about the Field Trips we took into Chicago? What great memories I have of Brookfield Zoo, the Field Museum and the Museum of Science and Industry. Did anyone go to York H.S. when the TV celebrities Homer and Jethro came there to sing and pluck their banjos? Did you ride your bike behind the truck outfitted with the mega fogger when they came by to "spray" for mosquitoes? Maybe that's why my hair fell out! We had Milk (glass gallon jugs), Sour Cream, Cottage Cheese and pastries delivered to our house in those little silver "boxes" near the front door. Did your Mom ever have her knives and scissors sharpened by the guy in the horse drawn cart? We saw some of the greatest movie "Epics" ever made at the York movie theater. Afterwards my Mom would take me and my Sister for Veal Cutlets and Malted Milks at the lunch counter at the Rexall's Drugstore down the block. Remember when the Wilder Mansion was a Library and the Lizzadro Museum of Lapidary Arts was brand new? I floated rafts on Salt Creek and gathered tadpoles and huge crawfish across the road (Butterfield Rd.) from Bryan Jr. H.S. in the empty field that used to be there when it flooded after rainstorms. I have many fond memories of Elmhurst and my childhood friends. I've always felt that my life would have turned out much different if I had been able to stay at 886 Bryan St. Not that my life isn't wonderful now, but it would have been interesting to see where I would have ended up. So .... does anyone remember me now?
