Susan's Story

Hello! It’s been a long while since 1972! 50 years, right? I hope most of you have grown up, found love, perhaps raised children, or had happy adventures. Bryan and I just celebrated 48 years together! We first met on the school bus going to Murphy in 1971! We have two grown children and several grandchildren, and we are still having fun. We have been truly blessed together, and we give God the credit. I’m sure we have all had our own individual ups and downs in our respective life journeys, but for Bryan and I, we have come thru it all side by side and with our faith, love and hope intact! Life can make you bitter or sweet- we chose the sweet. As witnesses in our boomer generation, we have been observers (and some, participants) in world events - Vietnam, 911, wars, the Covid Pandemic, political turmoils and upheavals, just to name a few. We have all lived through many changes, cultural shakes, and quakes, nationally, politically, and personally! For the most part, I hope we have ALL realized that high school was NOT ‘it’! There is and was so much more to do, see and learn. I was raised early on that snobbery, popularity, exclusive cliques, class distinctions, sororities, fraternities, make-up, finger nail polish, and brand-name clothes did not develop true character, and certainly did not help develop depth of purpose, or intellect. I hope most of you have learned that too. High school was merely a stepping stone (or an obstacle!) to endure and get through. We are all much older now, and I hope your lives are richer and wiser for it. Most of you I do not remember…..there’s been 67 years of other people, life events and other memories to process and experience, and high school has faded over the years. During these years of mine, I have learned grace, love, compassion, the value of introspection, hind sight, and self-examination; and more importantly, the discovery of who I am. As a parent, I have learned to love, give and put my kids ahead of myself. ...Expand for more
As a wife, I have learned compromise, growth, joy and happiness. There is no comparison to finding your soul mate early on and growing up, loving and learning together. Things I have done and experienced: I am a published poet and writer, I am a singer and shared my gift of song in churches, secular venues and CD, I am an artist (like my mother) and love the creative process. (I hope to leave this legacy to my grandkids, in hopes they will follow in artistic pursuits as well.) I am a genealogist and historian. I quilt and sew. I am a master needleworker in the art of embroidery. I am a collector of antiques and art. Over the years, our home has been my canvas. Bryan has always been successful with work, and provided for our family, and our kid’s education. Both are college grads plus. When in our early 40’s, We moved away from the south and now live at the tip-top corner of the map! We’ve also been able to travel abroad to other cultures and countries, and here at home as well. Our daughter is living her dream of owning her own business and sharing it with her soulmate hubby. Our son is a Dean of Students, long-time married to his college sweetheart (she’s a doctor!) and they are raising a delightful family (our fabulous grandkids!) I never had the desire much for social media, but at 68, I have relented and joined facebook & Instagram, and now enjoy those venues. With the perspective of years of experience and hard-won insights, I assume and hope you have endured and achieved much of the same. If not, its never too late. So, I encourage you to start. Start now. Start with a clean slate and begin. All over again, if you have to. Our generation still has more life to experience and pursue, more to learn and contribute. Even at 68. The world still needs our expertise, our experience. Our kids still need it, and certainly our grandchildren! Life is a beautiful and valuable journey. And I wish you the best success as you embark on the rest of yours.
