Susan's Story

Taking advantage of every opportunity to enhance my education, by life and formal opportunities, life post-'78 has been a strange mixture of gifts, triumphs, misfortunes, and tragedies. True or lasting love, evasive, I've not married, & am unable to have kids, so, subsequently gave birth to: 3 post-FHS degrees, and 2 "higher Ed" certificates. Own kids are 4-legged pets, my truest blessings being my 8 most prized Wonders of this World: 5 most handsome nephews and 3 amazingly beautiful nieces! However, no world can be perfect and in its time, it has taken a niece, father, brother, and those grandparents I was privileged to know and call mine. Soon, my mom, to join them. I've enjoyed all chances to explore the beauty of the US, and visit multiple Western countries and municipalities, I'd never thought I would see. It surely was something to travel abroad. Ever a student in life, I remain a current affairs junkie, amazed that MY lifetime has brought us, in one National Election, a woman AND a person of color as candidates for nomination to run, and subsequently left us with an American-African the 44th US President: Barack H Obama (D-IL). The Fates have enjoyed playing Life with me: teasing my health, social and personal lives, and practical studies in the formalities in the births of my multiple diplomas, certificates, and practice's license; yet leaving me to be challenged beyond them too, with wonders of high white water rafting, sailing Gulf waters, swimming 2 1/2 miles of a Greek shipping lane, jumping out of a plane (tandem), learning to ride & show (win) equestrian events. As close as I've been to my family of origin, I have spent most of my adult life "coming and going" from WNY. Usually in cycles of 4-5 yrs. away, 1-2 ...Expand for more
back in the area. However, in May '07, I returned to WNY, my mother quite ill and having been so for a couple of years, she'd had an episode where I thought I'd find regrets if I didn't spend or find as much quality time with what has become the remainder of my family. Now, the summer of '09 brings us Hospice and more vigilant care for Mom. While not necessarily an admirable motto to some, the Wells' has long been "Hard Time, No Charge." In life, if one can tease and laugh with the family you can't choose, then laughing with the one you do, is so gratifying, and much less hard to discern whether with or at them. While I dare the Fates to continue their tease with me, I reach for the best from nearly most circumstances, knowing I'd heard lesson upon lesson about positivity over negativity, half full to half empty, and life holding no guarantees, only the right to pursue happiness -- the Fate always winning in the end, as no one gets out of this life, alive. Far too long I have taken myself and all that I have seen, done, heard, experienced at some time; along with what comes to me each day, more than too seriously, I have to admit that were it not for a little sarcastic wit, I'd have dared the Fates much more than I have. Now I'm not one for buying into the BS that 40s' the new 30s' and so on and such. I can't help but see in the eyes of the next generation, aspirations and hopes that I know mine once held, and come to think that "What of it? Life isn't over and no one has shown me the writing or fine print, that says do overs or duffs, aren't allowed. So I am respecting all that I've had, lost, found, renewed, and wait expectantly, for my next opportunity, to do or take a leap of faith toward another challenge or adventure.
