Susan's Story

Life Currently, I am living 8 miles south of Harrisburg in a community called Rudement. I have lived in the Pope County/Saline County area every since graduation. I married in 1991, and divorced after 12 years of marriage in 2004. I have no children but have a cat and a dog. After high school, I gave college a try for 2 1/2 years, but wasn't dedicated. I went to work for my father at the Quarry and worked there until it sold in 1989. After my father died in 1990, my brothers and I took over my father's cattle operation and formed BMS Farms serving as the 3rd partner and responsibility as bookkeeper. I worked for the 1990 Census, TCT Christian Television (that was an experience), and landed a job as Secretary/Bookkeeper at Southeastern Illionois Regional Planning and Development Commission in 1991. SIRP&DC is a regional econimic development planning agency and I assisted in areas of small business loans, federal and state grant writing and administrating. I was approached by the local township government to be thier Secretary around 1992 and still working for them serving more as a bookkeeper than secretary. In 1996 I wanted to finish college, so I went back to SIU while working full time and graduatine in December, 2000 with a Bachelor of Science in Business Communications. In May, 2001 I accepted a contracted position with SIC to teach Business Technologies at the Golconda Job Corps, where I am currently working. I have a passion for Habitat for Humanity. Around 1997, I attended an organizational meeting to form a Habitat affiliate in Saline County. I was appointed to the stearing committee and assisted with the applicati...Expand for more
on process. Later, I was named to the board of directors and served as the secretary until we became an official affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International in May, 2000. Once Habitat for Humanity of Saline County was form, I resume the position of Secretary for 2 years then served as President. I took several months off after my divorce and now, back into my ole position as Secretary. I have assisted with 2 houses and working with the 4th. I am currently serving my 3rd year term as decon at the First Presbyterian Church and in Harrisburg and sing in the church choir. My life has not all be about work. I have vacationed in St. Thomas, US Virigan Islands; Cancun, Mexico; Gatalinburg, TN; Texas, Virginia; Kansas City, MO; and Southern Califorina. I love to go see the St. Louis Cardinals and go to games out of the area and check out other statums. I also enjoy the theater and go to the Fox in St. Louis every chance I get (which is not very often.) After my divorce, I moved home to Herod and re-grouped. I purchased my brother's house in Aug. 2004 (completely landscaped with a pool) and often feel like I'm writting the next Stephen King novel. Several things have gone wrong from finding a black snake in the tub to replacing the septic line; loosing trees, flooding basement and other smalls things to numberous to mention. In the summer, I'm kept busy mowing the 2.8 acres, weeding the many flower beds, and keeping up the pool. It has been an experience being a single home owner with alot of work and responsibilities. At 39, before leaving the ex, I traded for the 40th anniverary Ford Mustang and celebrated my 40th birthday.
