Susan's Story
Life
I am a professor of International and Multicultural Education at the University of San Francisco, currently developing an emphasis in Human Rights Education in our MA and doctoral programs. My passion is teaching people of all ages. I have lived in the Bay Area since 1972, when I came to UC Berkeley for grad school in East Asian Studies. I dropped out soon afterwards and got very involved in community organizing (70s in Berkeley, you know!). I did all kinds of jobs - from working in a glass factory to waitressing to word processing. My favorite job in the 70s was as a drama/puppetry teacher as part of the city's East Oakland Revitalization Project, funded by CETA, and then I realized the magic of teaching kids. hich I adored. During those years I also went back to grad school at UC Berkeley in Language and Literacy Education and finally received my Ph.D. in 1994. I've been a prof at USF, a Jesuit university, since 1996. I've been blessed with many opportunities to travel in my job, especially in Central/South America, China and Eastern Europe. I love my work, family, community of friends, and many outdoor activities of hiking, kayaking, swimming, etc. I hope all my Allen High classmates come to the Bay Area to visit me before our next 40th reunion! (written 2007).
Update 2021! I finally became a grandma on September 28, 2019, to a beautiful spirited sweet girl named Roma Pearl Weinberg DiMarcellis. They all live in St. Helena in the Napa Valley where I’m so fortunate to spend 2 days a week there. What a blessing to have a baby (now toddler) to care for during the last 16 months of the pandemic!
Hope to see many of you in person at our 55th reunion in 2022! ❤️❤️
