Susan's Story
Was married for 31 years and raised 6 children. Now have 6 wonderful grandchildren too.
Went back to college after divorce and did a double major in Business Management and Marketing. Graduated with High Honors.
Went into insurance for a while and now am working for a major Mortgage brokerage firm as the Supervisor of Operations. Love my career!!
For fun I bowl on a couple of leagues and tournaments. Win a little money sometimes too!
I am an avid reader and political conservative.
Love my life and family.
I live on a mountain with great views and wilflife.
I always wanted to be a doctor when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a great idea. As it turns out, they were wrong.
I was born in Illinois, moved to CA where I went to Righetti. Shortly after graduation I moved to Florida for 13 years, where I married Larry and had 4 of my children. We moved to New Hampshire for 8 years, had 2 more children and loved the 4 seasons. After his company closed we moved to SC for 18 years. Too hot and muggy. He lost his job there and went back to Florida, which turned into a separation and subsequent divorce. I got the kids, house and basically everything. He got his freedom and an hourly wage job... Since then he has had minimal contact with the family and hasn't even seen his grandchildren. Very sad. The kids really missed him at first, then got mad when he turned his back on them and finally moved on. He is now disabled, uses an oxygen tank and sits at a computer most of the day, when he can...Expand for more
sit up. Like I said, very sad.
I enjoy the good live in Virginia now. Moved here after graduating and it is the most beautiful place I have ever lived, except CA.
Hate the traffic, but live so far out in the country that the commute is worth it. Once I get there it is peaceful and revitalizing.
I think the biggest surprise in my life has been success after the age of 50. Going back to school was terrific and being involved in the business and political environment is more fulfilling that I would ever have imagined.
Raising a large family taught me so many things.
Learning how to budget and make just about everything from scratch, not to mention how to fix things, landscape, patch holes in walls and avoid paying a plumber!
Of course patience is probably the biggest benefit derived from parenting and has come in very handy in the business world.
Which teacher would I love to see again? I used to hate Senior English, Mrs. Cresap, but have to say, in retrospect, that I learned a lot from her and actually found that I use it! I would love for her to know that I finally 'made it'!!
My volunteer life - I used to be on the Disaster Action Team for the Red Cross and also ran the central SC shelter for 5 years. It was great to be able to work within the emergency services team with the state and help people who had been hit by a natural disaster or forced to evacuate from their home.
I am still in touch with Babette Heimbuck (McElderry) and Marilyn Meyers (Bickmore). E-mail is an awesome tool.
