Susan's Story

I attended MJC in Gaithersburg after graduation. After that, I got a job at the Little Tavern Shops business office in Silver Spring; also worked at GEICO in Chevy Chase for a while. In Sept. 1970, I got married and moved to Newark Ohio. My two sons were both born there. While my kids were growing up, I attended college (on and off, trying to finish) and worked at the local YWCA teaching fitness, gymnastics and aerobics. I also did lots of volunteer work for causes related to women and girls. In 1984 I remarried. Jim and I created a "blended family" with his son, Josh, and my two sons, Nate and Trevor. All three boys are married now with families of their own. We have 10 grandchildren. Jim had a heart attack July 2008, so it was pretty scary for a while. Thankfully, he's doing very well. Unfortunately, he was laid off in January, but is back on a "flex" schedule now. I never thought I'd find a relationship that would last over the long haul, but after several heart breaking disappointments, I finally did. My husband and I celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary on June 2, 2009. We took a short trip to the same hotel, The Island House Inn, Port Clinton, OH, and stayed in the same room where we spent our honeymoon in 1984. So many things have changed over the years. We feel fortunate that we could re-visit the place where we began our married life together. I've been working at Ohio State University for 18 years. I'm the office mana...Expand for more
ger for the population research office at OSU. After living in Ohio for 41 years and working at the university for so long, I consider myself a true Buckeye. Jim and I restored a WW 1 era historic house in the 1990s. It was a big project, but we both love history and old buildings, so we had fun. In 2004, we moved from Newark to Columbus so I could be closer to work and downsized to a much smaller house in the Upper Arlington area. I kept pretty active in fitness until 2006 when I shattered my fibula in a freak accident while on vacation at Shenandoah Natl Park. Due to the extent of the injury, i.e. surgery, metal plate and screws, I don't do much in the way of fitness activities but still love cooking, antiquing, movies, meeting with friends and, of course, spending lots of time with the grandchildren. They call me Grammy and my husband is Gramps. I've kept in touch with Karen Henry over the years, but she's about the only one. Recently though, I've reconnected with a few other old friends like Dave Frazier, Jimmy Fitzpatrick and Pat Hill. Seems so hard to believe that 40+ years have gone by since high school--how did that happen? My Mom still lives in Maryland, but my siblings are scattered all over the country. My Dad died in 2004 and my brother, Kevin, died in 2006. Life has so many ups and downs, but with all of its sadness and disappointment, there is joy and lots to be thankful for too. Everyday above ground is a good day!
