Susan's Story

After graduation, Susan went to Stanford University where she graduated April 1, 1960 with a BA in theatre and stayed on to complete an MA in 1961. In the fall of 1962, she took a job at Bakersfield College in California as a scenographer and teacher. She was there for 7 years before going to the University of Oregon to work on a PhD in general theatre. In 1973 with degree in hand she began 3 years as director of theatre at Keuka College in upstate New York. While there she moved the theatre area from the English Department to a Department of Theatre and Dance and served as chair. The next year the arts areas were combined into a single department also with Susan as chair. Susan was hired as Director of Theatre in the Speech Department at Appalachian State University in Boone, NC in 1975, and served as chair of the Department of Theatre and Dance from its formation in 1989 to her retirement in 2005. She has directed more than 60 plays and has designed scenery and lighting for over 50 productions and costumes for more than 80. e, and Alpha Psi Omega, national theatre honor society. Honors include the College of Fine and Applied Arts award for Service, the Suzanne Davis award for service to theatre in the south, the Herman Middleton Award for service to theatre in North Carolina and the Marian Smith outstanding career award. After her retirement, she was awarded The Order of the Long Leaf Pine by the Governor of North Carolina for more than 30 years service to the state. Also a theatre historian, her research interests, publications and presentations have been focused on nineteenth century American actors and actresses, playwright Romulus Linney, and the Elizabethan Public Playhouse. Susan was been married to Bob, a master beekeeper, for 43 years and is stepmother to his 3 sons, 7 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. Bob was an internationally known beekeeper and teacher and passed away on February 6, 2020. Susan still lives in Todd, NC a rural area north of Boone, the home of Appalachian State. She still enjoys opportunities to travel, continues her volunteer work with Lions Clubs International, and enjoys her remaining 2 cats.
