Susan's Story

Life After High school I decided I didn't want to go to college and got a job with an insurance company. I had been dating my husband, Mike, for 2 years and we were planning on getting married when he graduated from ASU. We were married in 1977 and had our first daughter in 1979. In 1982 we had a second daughter and a son followed in 1985. During this time my husband started his own business and I ran the office and did all the bookkeeping. It worked out perfectly since our office was out of our home and so I could be home with the children. I was a girl scout leader for 6 years, and then started sewing costumes for my daughter's high school drama dept. My middle daughter is very involved in acting and I love to sew so it worked out great. All the while I was able to do the bookkeeping and stay sane! The last of my children, my son, will move out next fall for U of A and we will be "empty nesters"! We are very excited - as long as they visit often (which they do!) We love to travel and have gone to Australia, Ireland, Hawaii, the Carribean, Canada, and many states in the US. Our kids have been very fortunate to see so many places! We have been very blessed and look forward to a happy retirement (hopefully in about 7 years!) and many grandchildren! That may be awhile as none of our children are married yet. We live life to the fullest because you never know what tomorrow will bring! UPDATE - JAN. 2008 Much has happened in my life since 2003 when I last wrote. My 3 children a...Expand for more
re all done with college, and our oldest daughter, Nicole, got married to a wonderful young man last March. They own a home in Chandler. Our middle daughter, Natalie, has started designing and selling jewelry and owns a condo 5 minutes from us in Awhatukee. Our son is a mortgage executive with Countywide Home Loans, owns a home in Tempe (at age 23!), and has been very successful. They are all still the "apples of our eyes" and have made us very proud. On a sadder note, I was injured during a test in the hospital and was left permanently disabled and in chronic pain for the rest of my life. I don't have the use of my right foot, and cannot walk more than a block without being in severe pain. I use a wheelchair for longer excursions and live on painkillers, along with an implanted device that helps with the pain. It has drastically changed both of our lives. No more snow skiing, hiking, water skiing, horseback riding or any other activities that we used to do together. Traveling is not the same since I tire very easily and we have to have a wheelchair wherever we go. We are doing our best to still live life to the fullest - it's just a different life now. I still consider myself to be very blessed and I try to thank God every day for all that he has given me. We hope to be retired soon and are in the process of building a home in Cave Creek that will be 1 story (I have stairs right now that are very difficult for me). And we are anxiously awaiting grandchildren, now that our daughter is married!!
