Susanah's Story
While I attended Lincoln I played clarinet in the orchestra, stage band, band, marching band and sang in the choir. I remember singing "Evergreen" two years before Barbra Streisand made it famous. I also took ceramics, wood shop, metal shop, and jewelry making. I still enjoy making jewelry although I don't do it by the "lost wax" method. It's been a long time since I attended LHS, but I have not always been idle. I practiced my clarinet for several years after graduation, then became a member of the Bellingham Recorder Society , playing soprano recorder. Eventually I taught myself to play the kalimba, a South African instrument, and the alto recorder, which I play alternately with the soprano at Church. Since then I have attempted to write my own music and have sung in several Church choirs. Now I am almost completely deaf but still enjoy music through ...Expand for more
assistive listening devices and a powerful hearing aid. I have recently completed two years of American Sign Language and have a few Deaf friends although I am about 30 years older than they are. I am grateful to God that while he took most of my hearing, he did not take my musical ability. I like to write poetry and prose, and enjoy painting, cross stitch and needlepoint in my spare time.
Music I enjoy: Mozart, Bach, Beethoven, Vivaldi, etc. The Moody Blues, Supertramp,Kansas, Led Zeppelin, The Bee Gees, Journey, Chuck Mangione, Winton Marsalis, Benny Goodman...nearly any kind of music except heavy metal and rap.
I like to read. My favorite authors include: Ursula K. LeGuin, Anne McCaffrey, C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien and many others. I especially like science fiction, cozy mysteries and fantasy books but have recently discovered Deaf Culture literature.
