Susanne (Reyes)'s Story
I was lucky and blessed, as I enjoyed learning, setting my goal to become a learning facilitator for my contribution.
I expected to marry and have children. I never intended to make my family my life, as children must grow and learn to contribute within their own generation, something my parents and grandparents never embraced.
I always believed in the value of faith and a personal relationship with Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior. I never understood competition or compromise among friends; hence, I pulled away from many groups in high school preferring one-on-one relationships.
An old mind in a young body perhaps, I grew up fast. In sixth grade, my father had a heart attack that changed my lifestyle, taking me from private school to public school. I never felt safe again.
I was forced to work for wages at an early age. I cleaned houses and provided nanny services from the age of twelve. I worked to pay for fabric to sew my own clothes, to attend high school and to pay for any other expenses required. While many of my peers had the fiscal support of their parents, I was expected to contribute for my fiscal needs other than shelter and food.
Thank God, for the many mentors, counselors, businesspersons, and teachers who helped me through all the back door opportunities they afforded. By the age of 42, I reached all my goals: Educator, Mother, Wife, and Person of Contribution.
Then life changed again, I experienced ...Expand for more
a series of losses and disappointments that further altered my view of life and the reason for being. My father died, my first marriage failed/died, my career of 20 years dissolved, my health and desire to live faded. I wanted to die; my faith in God was being tested again, so I got up, and began to live differently, one day at a time.
I met someone, who told me, "if you want another crop plant another seed, and that." it takes more courage to live, then to lie down and die." Thanks Charles Oppenheim.
Since those testing years, I am -- really born again, more gracious, more kind, even more generous than prior to my fall from grace. I am really am blessed with a second spouse who is primarily my friend; my grown children are great citizens, I love and respect them both; and I lived to see my grandson accept Jesus as his Savior.
I acquired many skills and gifts allowing me to become interdependent, with no fear for my future, as my faith lead me to a life that extends beyond this world of things and people.
I learned from solitude, and a few intimate friends along this journey called life; that it is important to tell one's story, stopping to say thank you, to all who contributed.
I am blessed, for knowing you all. My joy is complete. Thank You.
