Susanne (Susie)'s Story

Life After graduating from Granite Hills, I attended Point Loma Nazarene University, majoring in literature and married Keith after my freshman year. After graduating second in my class, I took a year off to travel to England with my husband and to work for Harcourt Brace Publishing. In 1989 I entered graduate school at the University of San Diego where I received my M.A. in English with a concentration in Medieval literature. While at USD, I worked as a research assistant for Sister Elizabeth Walsh, the department chair, and this position resulted in co-editing a collection of essays for publication in 1993. I also taught in the German department at USD for a short time before obtaining my dream job: a part-time instructor position in the literature department at Point Loma Nazarene University. I taught composition, German, research technique, and ancient and medieval literature. I gave up teaching at the university level in order to start homeschooling our four children, one girl and three boys. Within our private homeschool program, Heritage Christian School, I have taught Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced (AP) Writing courses to junior high and high school students as well as teaching my own children at home, plus classes for younger students in Poetry, Medieval History, and Shakespeare. Despite health issues (rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, Addison's Disease, etc.), we have graduated all four of our children from home education via Heritage Christian School. me while our middle son, who married in June 2018, works for Home Depot while he applies to the San Diego Sheriff's Department. Our youngest attended Grand Canyon University in 2018-2019 and took some multimedia animation courses at Mesa and is currently working for Amazon. Currently, we attend Pine Valley Community Church, and I also attend weekday services at Blessed Trinity Anglican Church. Since 2001, we have lived in a converted mountain cabin in beautiful Pine Valley, 50 miles east of downtown San Diego. Since 2002, I have taught online courses in poetry, grammar, MLA research essays, literary analysis, and Shakespeare to families around the world at Brave Writer. In the past, I have been the featured speaker at the annual women's retreat for Lake Murray Community Church on contemplative prayer, and I have also been a workshop leader in journaling and blogging at Pine Valley Bible Conference Center's annual Women's Retreat. Teaching, writing, and editing take up most of my time. I have edited the 2011 Book of Common Prayer for the Reformed Episcopal Church. At present, I am writing my third novel, and the stories and books that I have published online under a pen name have received more than four million reads. I have also been blogging at Meditative Meanderings since August 2006 and have my own online editing and essay grading service at SusanneBarrett.com. Recently, I have started editing variations of Jane Austen's novels by authors Abigail Reynolds and Maria Grace while hoping to have time to write some Austen variations of my own.
