Suzanne's Story

Here goes a short story of what I have been up to for the past 50 years. I have a total of five wonderful children - three sons of my own and a son and daughter from my marriage to John. We have five grandchildren ranging in age from 3 to 22. We moved to Winchester, Virginia not quite two years ago. John's company, Miller and Smith, a home builder has a number of properties in Winchester so they transferred John. He had been commuting for three years from Fairfax Station. We moved from 5 acres to an in-town home and love not having all the work. Work wise I have had a really interesting career. I became a real estate agent in 1972 and worked in commercial real estate for almost 20 years. In the early 90's I was a senior asset manager for the Resolution Trust Corporation. In 1993 I became the public relations/marketing manager/public spokesperson for the first private toll road in the US in over 100 years, the Dulles Greenway. In fact, I named the road. I worked for General Charles Williams in this position. After that I followed General Williams to the DC Public Schools andbecame the Policy Manager him in his position as Facility Director for DC Public Schools. In this position, I formulated ...Expand for more
and executed a plan to close and sell/lease a number of vacant/underutilized schools in DC. After this, I became the Chief Operating Officer for a small non-profit renovating and managing affordable housing projects. Most of my work was in Tulsa, Okla. and El Paso, Texas. When Secretary of State Colin Powell took office, he asked my old boss, General Williams to become Assistant Secretary overseeing the management of all Department of State properties and building new embassies. I was asked to become Chief of Staff and this has to be the most fun I have had in a job. I traveled to over 90 countries in 5 years, spending 462 days on airplanes. Many times, up to three flights a day. I was in most of the "Stans" in eastern Europe, all over Africa, the Middle East, Far East and South America. During my time at the DOS, we completed 45 new embassies when they had been done only 1 a year. It was incredible to travel and see our diplomatic posts around the world. I am now doing some consulting work with a firm that is interested in building some of the new embassies and also doing commercial real estate in Winchester. I really am looking forward to our 50 year reunion. Hope to see you all there.
