Suzanne's Story
I've moved away from Tulsa many times but always come back. Tulsa has changed so much (not all of it for the better). My elementary school is gone, my Jr high school is now an elementary school, Central (the REAL one) was saved as offices of AEP/PSO. New Tulsa is now at 71st & Mingo but my heart is still downtown. I lived close so I would walk there on weekends to see movies at the Ritz, Orpheum, Majestic, and Rialto. That sparked my interest in entertainment. Later in life when I worked at Warner Bros Studios, I would walk down the halls of the old buildings with pictures of Betty Davis, Humphrey Bogart, Errol Flynn, etc. hanging on the walls and could not have imagined being in the place I had dreamed of. It was such fun just going to work. How ironic that I now am giving presentations for the Historical Society on old Tulsa theaters.
In my Tulsa, there was so much going on downtown. It was fun to get on the bus just to see where it would take you. Lunch at Vandever's tea room was a special treat.
I lived near Owen Park and spent a lot of time there catching tadpoles in the creek and climbing the pine trees. My mother had a tough time getting the sap off of me. In the summer they would have square dances on ...Expand for more
the tennis courts. Fascinating to watch them dance. Sometimes I would walk to the Cain's Ballroom at noon to see Johnny Lee Wills broadcast his radio show. I remember the watermelon stand on Denver and 4th Street. A slice was so good when it was cut fresh and you could sit and eat at the wooden picnic tables.
When I was adventurous, I would get on my bike and ride out to Mohawk Park or the Will Rogers theater. No worries about something happening to me. I usually had to call for a ride home because I was too tired to pedal back home.
I loved to roller skate at the Arena. It is now under the 11th street Highway 75 bridge. I swear I can still hear the organ music when I drive past. That place changed my life.
We lived next door to a family with 5 boys. They had a really big screened porch on the front of their house. In the summer we would play monopoly for hours. At night we could lay out in the front yard and count the stars.
I had a few really good friends but I was kind of shy and had trouble joining a group.
What a life I have had. It wasn't perfect, though if I could I wouldn't change a thing. I wished I could have given those experiences to my children, but they claim that theirs were better. I love that.
