Suzi's Story

I was an IFYE Exchangee to Australia in the early '70s and that was were i met my husband, Bruce. We raised South Devon, Limousin & Brahmousin cattle, as well as Appaloosa horses which we raced in country NSW & southern Qld., as well as showed in halter and under saddle...along with a little cutting! The drought was rough on us and we had to find jobs so we ended up as managers of Main Camp Station at Rappville outside of Casino. Here we ran beef cattle and several stud herd, as well as farmed soybeans and other crops, until the property was sold up. After that we briefly managed a mixed farming & grazing property between Moree & Goondiwindi. In 19885 we went over to the states after selliing up all our cattle, horses, plant & equipment...well all except for our Appaloosa stallion and our black cat, Simon who also came over! After a year, we bought a place down at Fallbrook (North County San Diego). Bruce had a RE Appraisal business and I was in escrow until I quit to join him. On a trip home to Oz, we purchased 5 Australian Cattle Dogs to be the foundation of Wallaby Kennels in So Cal. ry into performance events....agaility, herding, obedience, rally & weight pulling. We also started a cycad nursery and became one of the largest cycad nurseries in the the USA. We imported some of the first Wollemi Pines into the US, and we grew Australian Bottle Trees and some palms, as well. A lot of our plants went to botanical gardens. The downturn in the economy caused us to quit the RE Appraisal business and concentrate on selling up our nursery so that we could move back to Australia. We had purchased a small, 30 acre farm outside the quaint and beautiful town of Childers, just SW of Bundaberg, and it became our goal to sell up and move back to the more relaxed lifestyle of rural Qld. Due to quarantine regulations, only one ACD came back to OZ with us. He had to do a final 30 days quarantine at the station outside of Sydney and then we drove down & brought him home to the farm here. I think he loves it here as much as we do...especially the beaches! Anyone who wants to find me can contact on Facebook. Next year (2013) we should be more organized and able to offer guest accomodation. I travel back and forth to SoCal to visit my mother and family, but I LOVE living here!
