Sylvia's Story

Life Hi all, I've been living in Seattle, WA since 1969. I love the rain, fog, and snow all of which we seem to be getting less of each year. I moved up here when I married the first time. I call it my practice marrige; it lasted 6 years. In 1983, I remarried to a wonderful man, Patrick Klopich, who knows how to make me laugh and rein me in when I need it. I retired in April 2001, after 32.5 years with the same company only the names changed (Pacific Northwest Bell, then US WEST, and finally Qwest). I loved my job as a technical writer, business/functional analyst, software tester and project manager, but saw the writing on the wall when Qwest bought out US WEST. My department made me a good deal so I left. During my years in Seattle I've spent lots of time finding myself. I've catered parties to see if I wanted to do that kind of work and have gotten involved in all sorts of arts and crafts from glass blowing to American indian basket weaving where we used our teeth to break down and separate cedar roots. I have finally decided to focus on drawing and painting, my first love, but don't mind getting sidetracked. An opportunity to illustrate a book came up, so, what the heck? Poets' Corner in Westminster Abby, by Joel W. Athey, was published 1996. My sister, Yolanda, introduced me to Joel who is a Prof. of English Lit. at CSUN. I've also won a couple of art competitions and had my art published on a US WEST pre-paid telephone calling card in 1997 and in an art book club magazine in 2003. Life is grand! o our home which included an art studio (woopie!) and a deck. The art studio is now my favorite place to spend my days, although I am trying to organize my retired life to fit in more time with my husband and friends, pet my 4.5 cats (the .5 cat is a stray), dig in the dirt, watch the stock market, since I am managing my retirement funds, and finish all the things left undone while working. I have starting a card company which I named "The Human Hand Card Company" while looking for other outlets to make money with my art. I am currently working on a public art project for the Seattle Art Museum's new Sculpture Garden which is scheduled to open in 2006. My drawings and those of a number of other botanical and scientific illustrators will be reproduced on tiles that will line one wall of a new 80 foot long greenhouse. The greenhouse will contain a 40-50 foot nurse log and will attempt to replicate the environment of a northwest forest--dim light, cool and damp. The drawings will be used for education purposes and will depict many of the plants and animals that use the nurse log during its decaying process. We are all looking forward to the grand opening. I am also on a waiting list for a pop-up book and card course, but meanwhile I will be taking more drawing classes and will be studying wood block carving and printing which I hope to use as a means to reproduce my botanical drawings. I enjoyed catching up with many of you, my classmates, during our 35th class reunion. Wishing you all a wonderful life. Take care and stay well. Sylvia Portillo (206) 938-1668
