Sylvia's Story
Oscoda was a wonderful time in my life. I arrived from Fort Worth, Texas in August of 1962 to begin my senior year at Oscoda Area High School. It was a wonderful year! The school was full of other Air Force brats and friendly locals. Everyone was accepting and friendly. I loved the cold weather and snow which introduced me to ice skating, sledding, etc. I was a cheerleader that year, known as the "center post."
After graduation I went to Olivet College in southern Michigan, met my first husband during a summer break, married and moved to Puerto Rico. When we returned, after a year at Ramey AFB, I finished my secondary ed degree at University of Tennessee. My son was born two months after graduation, and a daughter followed 22 months later. I divorced, moved to Valdosta, Georgia and began my professional life, teaching English and then Special Ed...for 34 years. Anoth...Expand for more
er marriage-another divorce included in that time frame...
My children went to college in Atlanta (Emory and Georgia State) and loved the big city life. I decided to follow them when the grandchildren appeared. I have never regretted a moment! My time is spent babysitting, helping to transport to activities, and volunteering in their school. I am a happy woman!
I would love to hear from graduates of the class of 1963-
We're the best there'll ever be,
We're the class of '63!
I would hope friends would remember me as friendly and outgoing.
I always wanted to be a teacher. I spent the last 20 years of my professional life working with children with severe emotional problems-victims of physical abuse, sexual abuse, schizophrenics, bi-polar, and just plain victims of bad parenting. It was wonderful and rewarding but exhausting physically and emotionally. I am through.
